A 29-year-old woman, Alba Karina Canales, has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 19-year-old after authorities linked her to a deadly fentanyl poisoning incident in Bastrop. The case unfolded when the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office responded to a treatment facility for recovering addicts where the young woman was found unresponsive in her bed.
In February of this year, deputies were called to the recovery home to investigate a possible overdose. When they arrived, they discovered the 19-year-old woman had already died. A search of her room revealed a powdery white substance hidden in a shoe in her closet, which was later identified as fentanyl.
This discovery led the sheriff’s office to look deeper into how the young woman had acquired the dangerous drug. Through their investigation, they learned that the victim had a friend who had been removed from the recovery home after failing a drug test. This friend expressed a desire to buy heroin, which led to a trip to Austin to meet with Canales instead.
Reports indicate that the two women traveled to Austin intending to buy $50 worth of fentanyl from Canales. After purchasing the drug, the pair allegedly smoked it in a parking lot before returning to the treatment facility. They split the remaining fentanyl before going their separate ways.
Phone records confirmed that the same fentanyl that was purchased from Canales was the substance involved in the incident. Tragically, the 19-year-old was found dead the next morning after reportedly using the fentanyl multiple times in just one day.
An autopsy concluded that the main cause of death was the toxic effects of fentanyl, with additional contributions from methamphetamine and prescribed medications that were found in her system. This startling news has raised concerns about the dangers of fentanyl and the increasing incidents of drug-related deaths in the area.
The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Canales has a lengthy criminal history related to trafficking and using illegal drugs. As of now, she is being held at the Bastrop County jail, with a bond set at $100,000. The community is shocked and saddened by the events that led to this tragedy, reminding everyone of the serious risks associated with drug use, particularly fentanyl, which has been known to be significantly more potent than other opioids.
Residents and advocates have expressed their outrage and concern over the ongoing opioid crisis, highlighting the need for increased awareness and prevention efforts. Many in the community worry that without proper education and resources, more lives could be at risk.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement is urging anyone who may have information related to this case or similar incidents to come forward. They also encourage those struggling with addiction to seek help, as resources are available to support individuals in recovery.
The tragic events surrounding this case serve as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by fentanyl and the urgent need for vigilance in addressing the ongoing drug crisis affecting many communities across the nation.
