As the company looks towards the beginning of January, they are now searching for an alternative buyer to take over the business. As part of this transition, Big Lots revealed that it has ramped up its plans to close stores. Originally, the retailer intended to shut down 344 of its 1,388 locations. However, new projections show this number has ballooned to over 550 stores, which includes a staggering 16 locations right here in Texas alone. The chain had already announced 50 additional closures since October, and now even more Austin-area stores are in the loop for liquidation.
With such a drastic reduction in locations, Big Lots is trying to maximize the value of its assets during this challenging phase. This means that they will do their best to clear out inventory and provide discounts to customers during the sales, aiming to recoup as much loss as possible.
Those behind the scenes are feeling the pressure as well. The CEO has mentioned that even though store closures are now a reality, there is hope—if a sale goes through, some closures could potentially be reversed. However, the news is less rosy for corporate associates, as a workforce reduction is anticipated in January. Some employees may receive WARN Act notifications, indicating layoffs will occur. This adds a layer of uncertainty as the workforce braces for what could be a significant hit.
Big Lots previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy back in September 2023, citing inflation and rising competition in the retail world as key factors for their struggles. The once-familiar name on the high street now faces a crisis as it tries to navigate these turbulent waters. Despite their intentions to finalize the sale to Nexus in December, the deal has unfortunately fallen through. This ongoing wave of closures means that over 400 Big Lots stores have already shut down this year, representing an enormous 30% reduction in locations.
The closures are hitting Texas the hardest. With 23 stores set to close, Texas leads the charge, followed by California, New York, and Florida. Local shoppers may need to act fast if they want to pick up bargains before their favorite Big Lots locations vanish for good.
