Austin, Texas – A troubling incident unfolded this week when a body was discovered on a trail near Lady Bird Lake. The incident came to light after a 911 caller reported seeing the body around 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Austin Police Corporal Matthew Nonweiler provided details during a media briefing, stating that the body was located along a trail in the 2700 block of Canterbury Street, positioned on the north side of the lake, just east of downtown Austin.
Police arrived promptly at the scene, confirming that the person was “obviously deceased.” Upon a preliminary investigation, officers found no signs of trauma on the body, leading them to believe there was no foul play involved. Corporal Nonweiler emphasized that “it is not being investigated as a homicide at this time.” Additionally, he clarified that the body was not recovered from the lake, stating there is “no indication that the body ever was in the water.”
This discovery follows a concerning trend at Lady Bird Lake, where, remarkably, three bodies have been found in the lake since February this year. The first body was reported in February, followed by another in April, and most recently, a man in his 60s was found floating in the lake on August 6. Similar to this week’s discovery, the August incident revealed no signs of trauma, raising additional questions about safety in the area.
In total, police have discovered five bodies this year connected to Lady Bird Lake. Authorities have made efforts to dispel rumors regarding the potential for a serial killer linked to these incidents, especially after a series of deaths near the lake and Rainey Street last year.
The repeated discoveries of bodies have understandably raised alarm within the community, with locals and visitors expressing concern over safety and the potential risks of being near the lake. Many people who frequent the area for jogging, biking, or simply enjoying the scenic views are now more vigilant, wondering about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Officials continue to gather information as they investigate the recent death along the trail. The police urge anyone with information that could assist in understanding the circumstances surrounding the body found on Wednesday to come forward.
This startling discovery reminds everyone about the importance of safety awareness when enjoying public areas, especially those near bodies of water. Authorities are encouraging the community to stay informed and report any suspicious activity or concerns to the police.
The Austin Police Department remains committed to investigating this case thoroughly while aiming to bring clarity to the community regarding these tragic occurrences. As more information becomes available, residents are encouraged to remain cautious and continue to support one another during this unsettling time.
As further investigations are underway, the community waits for updates from law enforcement, hoping for answers and reassurance in the wake of these discoveries at Lady Bird Lake.
