While the brush fire in northeast Austin was controlled quickly, there exists a larger concern regarding wildfires in Gillespie County. This county is currently battling a separate, more extensive wildfire known as the Crabapple Fire, which has burned 9,858 acres as of Tuesday. The Crabapple Fire started on Saturday in the 8700 block of Lower Crabapple Road and is reported to be 90% contained at this time.
In terms of destruction caused by the Crabapple Fire, multiple structures have been lost. Reports indicate that nine residences have been destroyed, including seven potentially occupied homes, along with twenty outbuildings that were either destroyed or damaged. A firefighter was hospitalized due to an injury from a falling tree limb but has since been released.
Evacuations were advised for residents in specific areas between North State Highway 16 and FM 1631, and between Ranch Road 1323 and Ranch Road 2721. A temporary shelter was set up at Zion Lutheran Church for evacuees but has since closed, although it may reopen if necessary due to changing conditions.
Local law enforcement agencies, such as the Fredericksburg Police Department, have cautioned residents to avoid the affected areas and refrain from calling dispatch for updates, allowing emergency services to focus on firefighting efforts.
With the ongoing challenges posed by wildfires throughout the region, the situation remains fluid. As emergency responders continue to assess the ongoing Crabapple Fire, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced that FEMA has approved funding to assist with firefighting operations. Additionally, the Texas Military Department is providing support to manage the firefighting efforts effectively. Updates on both the Crabapple Fire and the recent brush fire in Austin will continue to unfold as authorities monitor the situation.
