“Buddymoons” – the latest wedding craze gaining popularity in Austin and Beyond

If you are planning your dream wedding, you might want to pay close attention to the latest trend in celebrating post-nuptial events – the “Buddymoon.”

What are Buddymoons?

Gone are the days where newlyweds go on honeymoon by themselves. The latest trend takes the conventional honeymoon to another level. Instead of a romantic getaway for just the two of them, newlyweds now invite their close friends and family to join in on the journey. Romantic? Maybe not. An adventure to remember for a lifetime? Definitely.

Where did Buddymoons Originate?

This trend started showing up on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok a decade ago, and has been growing in popularity ever since. Celebrities were some of the first adopters of this trend. For instance celebrity couple Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux were known to have invited close friends Courteney Cox, Chelsea Handler, and Jason Bateman to their honeymoon in Bora Bora in 2015 catered by the wedding planner renown Marcy Blum.

Why Buddymoons?

One simple answer to this “why not?” However, many couples choose buddymoons because they extend the wedding festivities with family and friends. It allows for longer celebrations, and a shared experience that they can remember for a lifetime. “You want them to be witnesses to how great of a trip you had,” said Francez Curbelo, a proponent of the trend, in an interview with The New York Times.

Impact of COVID-19 on Buddymoons

The COVID-19 pandemic has also influenced this trend. Due to travel restrictions and social distancing norms, couples are now more willing to share their honeymoon time with their friends and family. “Let’s face it, you have the rest of your life to be just the two of you, so why not max out the rare time where you have all your loved ones around you?” said Zoe Burke of Hitched, a wedding planning site.

Pros and cons of Buddymoons

While this trend might seem appealing to some, it’s not for everyone. Buddymoons may seem like a great idea for extroverted couples and those with a tight-knit group of friends. However, for introverted couples or those who value a more traditional honeymoon, this might not be the best idea. In summary, whether or not a buddymoon is a valid choice depends on individual preferences and circumstances.

The concept of a buddymoon is a perfect example of how traditions evolve with changing times. In the end, what truly matters is that the newlyweds enjoy their celebration in a way that suits them best. After all, it is their day!
