A New Approach to Cancer: Convention to Make Cancer Less Intimidating for Young People Arrives in Austin

In a fresh move to alter the grim perception of cancer, especially among the younger population, New York-based Stupid Cancer organization is bringing their flagship event, CancerCon Live 2024, to Austin. To be held at the Hyatt Regency from August 15-18, this event is designed to change the experiences of Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) dealing with cancer.

Mission: Making Cancer Suck Less

Disrupting the conventional narrative surrounding the disease, the key mission of the event is making the cancer experience “suck less” for AYAs aged 15 to 39. The attendees will include not only cancer patients and survivors, but also caregivers, healthcare professionals, and other affected individuals, thereby cultivating a holistic support system.

What’s on the Agenda?

The four-day convention will present attendees with a varied program, including inspiring speeches, insightful workshops, and networking opportunities. The participants can look forward to sessions addressing crucial aspects such as “Navigating Medical Billing and Health Insurance”, “Cancer in the Bedroom: Sex & Intimacy” and “How Psychiatry Can Help You Cope”, along with over twenty other topics.

A Convention like No Other

Where CancerCon stands out is in infusing traditional aspects of a convention with a compassionate cause. Attendees can expect an exhibitor arena and a dedicated store offering Stupid Cancer merchandise. The guests will also have access to open lounge spaces for relaxation and interaction throughout the event. What’s more, the guests will be treated to breakfast and lunch on two of the event days.

Adding further dynamism to the event are a talent show, karaoke and open mic nights, and a dance party ensuring the participants have a good time while navigating their journey with cancer.

A Bit about Stupid Cancer

The brainchild of Matthew Zachary, who himself underwent cancer treatment as a child, Stupid Cancer came into existence in 2012. Zachary acknowledged the need for enhanced support for AYAs affected by cancer. His first initiative in 2004, Steps for Living, morphed into the I’m Too Young for This! Cancer Foundation, and subsequently evolved into Stupid Cancer.

Join the Movement

To participate in this extraordinary event, tickets priced at $200 can be purchased online at stupidcancer.org . Corporations and individuals willing to be sponsors or exhibitors can also reach out to the organizers. In keeping with the inclusive nature of the event, a limited number of need-based scholarships are offered.

An Event of Solidarity and Hope

In the words of a former participant, Christina, “I’ve felt more myself in the past few days than I have since my diagnosis.” This statement encapsulates the essence of CancerCon. For young cancer patients and survivors, it promises to be an event that not only provides critical resources but also fosters connections and camaraderie, thereby making the journey with cancer a bit less daunting.
