Austin Drag Queen Celia Light Sheds Her Glow on Her Life as a Queer Christian

Austin – Before she came out as queer to her parents, Celia Light created a sanctuary within children’s ministries and battled within herself to accept her queer identity as a Christian. Now, Celia replaces the struggle with a joyful acknowledgment of who she truly is, empowering audiences as an Austin-based drag queen.

Embracing the Stage

Celia Light, who spent her formative years in Dallas, spends her time off-stage perfecting musical routines and crafting the extravagant outfits she proudly sports under the limelight. When she transforms into her drag persona, she finds serenity performing as her most authentic self.

Honoring the Sabbath

Light fondly recalls helping her mother design biblical stage costumes and working as a Sunday school teacher, following the family tradition. Moving from one church to the next while in search of enlightening environments fostered a deep spirituality in Light that fuels her performances.

A Break from the Altar

Light’s faith has always remained constant, although it wasn’t without its tests. The internal struggle of not being out to her parents culminated in Light bravely revealing her queer identity in February 2020. While the disclosure left her feeling lonely, it clarified that her faith and respect for herself were the supportive pillars she needed the most.

The Magic of Drag

Light has experienced a deeper connection to herself and her faith through her work as an entertainer. Her parents might not yet fully understand her life or her joy, but Light takes immensely from performing, a practice she vows to continue.

Finding Herself under the Cross

Light recently performed at a church event for a drag entertainment and delivery service she works with. The experience, although initially met with hesitance due to it being unfamiliar territory, turned out to be an emotionally fulfilling endeavor. Light found solace performing her favorite hymn “I’m His Child” in drag, a statement that signifies her commitment to her faith and her identity. She has empowered herself with the understanding that her relationship with God transcends societal expectations of what it means to be a godly person.
