East Austin’s Coco Coquette: A Colorful Journey of Self-Expression and Celebration

East Austin’s Vibrant Wig Wonderland: A Journey with Coco Coquette

In the lively streets of East Austin, a colorful boutique stands out like a rainbow beacon—Coco Coquette. This whimsical shop, owned by Allyson Garro, has captured the hearts of locals and visitors since it opened its doors in 2010. With an array of wigs, makeup, fancy headpieces, and a generous sprinkle of glitter, Coco Coquette invites everyone to embark on a celebratory journey of self-expression and creativity.

An Inspiring Story

Allyson’s love for all things adorned began in New Orleans. Between 1999 and 2003, she immersed herself in the city’s vibrant parade culture, where celebration and individuality intertwined. “There, you see people from all walks of life celebrating and expressing themselves in a really authentic and creative way,” she recalls. This initial exposure sparked her desire to delve into the world of costuming and fashion.

In pursuit of her dreams, Allyson moved to Los Angeles to study costume construction. Although she ventured into wardrobe design for film and television, her experience did not match her creative expectations. “I did not love it,” she admits candidly. A twist of fate occurred when a friend invited her on a spontaneous road trip to Austin. “I got here in 2008, and Austin felt so special. I said, ‘I think I just moved to Austin, Texas,’” she recalls with a sparkle in her eyes.

The Birth of a Boutique

Allyson began to reflect on her true passions—“adornment, costuming, celebration,” and the joy of dressing people. This dream took shape during a fun-filled bachelorette party planning session. “I said, ‘Come to the shop. Let’s celebrate with wigs.’ We had so much fun. There was a moment that I was looking around the room, and I was like, ‘Wait, this. This is a thing. This is it!’” That experience blossomed into what Coco Coquette is today.

Every visit to the boutique is an invitation to celebrate, to don a wig, and to unleash a playful side often tucked away. Many first-time visitors, initially skeptical, find themselves transformed after just a few moments. Allyson captures these “a-ha” moments beautifully: “They realize how fabulous they look,” she notes, referring to the excitement that comes with exploring new looks. “All of a sudden, they are wearing fake lashes, lipstick, glitter, and fabulous hair. It gives people permission to be this different version of themselves that is so liberating and so exhilarating.”

A Diverse Product Offering

Coco Coquette features a range of stunning products sourced from independent designers. One of Allyson’s creative joys is making elaborate headpieces and custom wigs. The shop also offers an eclectic mix of vintage clothing, theatrical makeup, and even drag and clown makeup. For those wanting to perfect their makeup skills, the boutique provides one-on-one appointments, whether it’s mastering smoky eyes or winged liner.

Support and Transformation

Allyson emphasizes the importance of what Coco Coquette contributes to people’s lives. “One of my favorite services that we offer are M2F (male to female) makeup appointments,” she shares. “We see people who are taking that step and need a complete rehaul of their wardrobes.” These transformation sessions often begin with a consultation to discuss style goals and figure out the best silhouettes.

However, the shop isn’t only focused on vibrant celebrations. “We are by no means a medical wig spa, but we do see people undergoing treatment who want a fun option,” Allyson explains. The boutique aims to provide a joyful space for those navigating challenges, including hosting large solidarity parties for cancer treatment.

A Call to Embrace Life

Allyson’s enthusiasm for wigs and adornment is infectious. “Oh my gosh. Where can you not wear wigs?!” she exclaims. “Life is so special. Every day is worth celebrating.” Those visiting Coco Coquette are reminded that there’s always reason to embrace creativity and joy—whether at a grocery store, a picnic with friends, or an extravagant party.

If you’re in East Austin, Coco Coquette is more than just a shop; it’s a place to explore the wonders of self-expression. Check out the boutique online and schedule your wig party at www.coco-coquette.com to experience the magic of transformation and celebration that awaits.
