WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — In a tragic case that has garnered significant attention, a jury has found 28-year-old Leandro Brito-Martinez guilty of murder linked to the death of 14-year-old Tobias Soto in 2022. The verdict was announced on Wednesday in Williamson County court, where it was decided that Brito-Martinez would serve an extensive sentence of 80 years in prison. The legal range for his punishment varied from 15 years to life.
The incident occurred on July 31, 2022, when Round Rock police officers discovered a stolen vehicle linked to Brito-Martinez. As law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle, Brito-Martinez sped away, weaving through traffic at astonishing speeds nearing 100 miles per hour. According to district attorney reports, the chase only lasted a short time, covering less than a quarter mile.
During this high-speed drive, Brito-Martinez ran a red light and collided with another vehicle at the intersection, fatally striking Tobias Soto who was walking in the area. Tragically, the entire event unfolded in just a few seconds, leaving a community in shock and mourning.
Following the crash, Brito-Martinez attempted to flee the scene of the accident but was quickly apprehended by Round Rock police. His arrest marked the beginning of a lengthy judicial process that eventually culminated in the recent sentencing.
Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick expressed his deep condolences for Tobias’ family after the verdict, stating, “Our hearts go out to Tobias’ mother and family, as well as all of the first responders and witnesses to this horrific event. Any case involving the death of a child takes an immeasurable toll.” He further emphasized how the conviction serves as a reminder of the need for accountability in cases of reckless and dangerous behavior.
District Attorney Dick highlighted the tireless efforts of law enforcement and prosecution teams, noting, “Brito-Martinez’s actions resulted in a senseless tragedy, and today’s verdict ensures he is held accountable. My office remains committed to seeking justice for victims and their families.”
The incident has resonated deeply within the Round Rock community, which has rallied to support Tobias’ family and raise awareness about the dangers of reckless driving. Memorials and tributes have been made in honor of the young boy who lost his life tragically while out walking.
In the wake of this case, many community members are now advocating for stricter laws surrounding vehicle thefts and reckless driving, hoping to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
The sentencing of Leandro Brito-Martinez serves as a pivotal moment for both the Soto family and the Round Rock community at large. As the community continues to heal from this tragic event, the hope remains that justice has been served and that lessons will be learned to protect others from such tragedies.
