Austin, Texas – A tragic incident occurred early Monday morning in downtown Austin, resulting in the death of a 42-year-old woman. According to the Austin Police Department, the woman was attacked and struck by a metal rod after allegedly robbing a man at knifepoint.

The situation unfolded around 1:38 a.m. when a passerby alerted police officers to a bleeding woman found in an alley on the 500 block of East Sixth Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the woman lying on the ground with blood visible on her shirt. Emergency medical personnel were summoned to the scene, and she was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving.

Identity of the Victim

The victim was later identified as Shannon Smith, 42 years old. Her death has left the community in shock and mourning.

The man who contacted the police regarding Smith was located by officers and identified as Gregory Watkins, 54. Watkins informed the police that he had known Smith and alleged that she had approached him armed with a knife, demanding both money and drugs. He claimed that during the confrontation, he struck Smith once with a metal rod he had been holding.

The police investigation is ongoing, and as of Monday evening, no charges had been filed against Watkins. He was interviewed by detectives but was later released.
