Austin, Texas – Austin natives have once again proved their commitment to preserving their local environment. The annual Earth Day Lake and Land Clean Up, known to be Austin’s largest environmental initiative, successfully cleared 8,000 pounds of trash from the beloved Town Lake. Returning to the city for its third consecutive year, the event witnessed active participation from the local community.
Austinites love their local lake, Lady Bird Lake, or Town Lake as the locals call it. Enjoyed by paddlers and hikers alike, the lake and surrounding trails are a community staple. However, amidst the fun and leisure, trash piles up, leading to the annual Earth Day cleanup event hosted on April 21.
Exceeding last year’s impressive tally, this year’s cleanup saw 1,400 dedicated volunteers removing trash from Lady Bird Lake and the contiguous area. Volunteers could choose between collecting trash in their own boats or picking up litter along river trails at three different cleanup sites: Rowing Dock (west end), Epic SUP (east end), and the Festival Beach trail.
The event, organized by renowned local paddle board, kayak, and canoe rental company Rowing Dock and the environmental nonprofit The Trail Conservancy, provided all necessary equipment for the cleanup. This included bags for trash collection, grabbers, and gloves. The event organizers also declared awards for the most trash collected and the “Weirdest Austin Item” found during the day, adding a fun competitive angle to the event.
To express gratitude towards the volunteers, all participants received a thank you gift of free t-shirt, delicious refreshments, and food from sponsors including Thundercloud Subs, Juiceland, Easy Tiger, and more. In addition to deriving satisfaction from contributing to a noble cause, the event gave the people of Austin a chance to appreciate their city’s natural beauty and interact with fellow community members.
The Earth Day Lake and Land Clean Up initiative intends to promote conservation of local wildlife and preserve the city’s natural glory for future generations. Austinites realize the importance of their responsibility towards maintaining this balance and answered this call to action in great numbers.
The success of this event and the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie it witnesses year after year unequivocally states one fact – Austin truly cares about its environment.
The event to clean up Town Lake was free for public participation, but required online registration. Those who wished to collect trash by boat were granted the liberty to bring their own craft after confirming their participation via email. For corporate volunteer groups, the event organisers requested a donation of $15 per person to The Trail Conservancy.
For a city famous for its lush green spaces and natural getaways, Austin’s largest Earth Day cleanup was an important way to give back to Mother Nature. The details about the next Earth Day Lake and Land Clean Up event will be updated on the Rowing Dock website.
