Austin, Texas, is bidding farewell to a local favorite as longtime Tex-Mex restaurant chain Chuy’s relocates its headquarters from the vibrant city to Orlando, Florida. This change comes hot on the heels of a major acquisition, with the final sale of Chuy’s to Darden Restaurants Inc. being completed on October 11, 2023.
According to reports, the acquisition was finalized after Chuy’s stockholders voted in favor of the deal a day earlier. Darden Restaurants is a well-known operator that boasts a portfolio of popular dining spots, including Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, Eddie V’s, and Bahama Breeze. With this sale worth approximately $605 million, many in Austin have taken notice.
“We are excited about the opportunity to join the Darden family and its portfolio of well-respected brands,” said Chuy’s CEO, President and Chairman Steven Hislop. He expressed confidence in Darden’s similar values and focus on team member culture.
Chuy’s has been a beloved establishment in Austin since it first set up shop on Barton Springs Road in 1982. Over the years, the restaurant has become famous for its delicious array of tacos, burritos, and fajitas. Today, there are over 101 Chuy’s locations across 15 states, including states like Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Florida. Indeed, the five locations in Austin have long been a gathering point for friends and families looking to enjoy Texas-inspired flavors.
As Chuy’s turns a new page, Austin’s culinary scene is buzzing with excitement from several recent openings and upcoming food events. One notable opening is a bakery from pastry chef Amanda Rockman, which occurred on October 11. Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop, located at 2400 E. Cesar Chavez St., promises to serve up sweet treats and coffee in a cozy space.
The menu features unique offerings, including chocolate chip cookies with halva, bagels with inventive cream cheese flavors, and churro croissants. The bakery opened its doors with limited hours first and plans to expand its offerings, including online ordering and catering options, in following weeks.
Food lovers can anticipate the upcoming Quesoff, a popular queso competition in Austin, set to take place on October 13. Participants will compete across several categories including Meaty, Spicy, Veggie, with a Best in Show award on the line. Held at The Mohawk, this event also supports local initiatives through the Central Texas Food Bank. Tickets are available for $20.
Another exciting event is a pickleball watch party at Victory Lap on October 15. Guests can cheer for the Texas Ranchers as they take on the Dallas Flash while enjoying free ranch waters for the first 100 attendees and participating in fun games such as PaddleSmash and a pickle eating contest.
Lastly, Eberly is set to host Artists in the Atrium on October 15 and 16. This creative event will feature works from Texas artists, accompanied by a menu inspired by their art. Food enthusiasts and art lovers alike will find this venue a delightful experience.
As Austin embraces these new culinary initiatives, it also prepares to say goodbye to a Tex-Mex institution. Chuy’s may be leaving its home, but Austin’s food scene remains rich and vibrant, promising exciting times ahead for both locals and visitors.
