His decision to retire comes as he wishes to spend more time with his wife, who is facing health issues as a polio survivor.
Cantu began his broadcasting journey at the young age of 17 in 1972 and made a transition to television in 1990. Over the course of his career, he has worked at three different television stations in Austin, but has been with CBS Austin/Telemundo since 2002. Among his notable coverage includes significant events like the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003, the Blanco River floods in 2015, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cantu’s retirement will leave a notable void in the Austin broadcasting landscape. His endearing nickname, “Uncle Fred,” reflects the affection that both colleagues and viewers hold for him.
