AUSTIN, Texas — Country music legend Garth Brooks is in Austin today to become the latest inductee into the esteemed Austin City Limits (ACL) Hall of Fame. This event marks a significant milestone as Brooks joins the ranks of artists who have profoundly influenced the world of music.
Garth Brooks is no stranger to accolades. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including several Grammy Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, and American Music Awards. Notably, he holds the title of the number one-selling solo artist in U.S. history, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His famous song, Friends in Low Places, continues to resonate with fans worldwide.
Brooks’ journey with ACL began in 1990 when he first performed on the show. He has fond memories of that night, comparing the experience to singing in a comfortable family living room. “The artist had to come second to the music, which is what you want as an artist,” remarked Brooks. He continued, “There’s no fireworks, no glitz, no glamour, just the truth. I think that’s why this show has stayed rock solid for 50 years.” These heartfelt words demonstrate Brooks’ appreciation for the show’s authenticity.
In an exclusive interview, Brooks expressed that Austin holds a special place in his heart due to its strong connection to live music. “This town has blown up. It’s five times the size it was when we started, and it will be five times this size next year. But it always remains Austin. It always remains music first,” he said.
Brooks credits ACL for believing in him from the outset of his career. He recounted a special moment with his father, who finally understood Brooks’ success when he announced they would be performing on the show. “We watched Austin City Limits as kids from 1972 on. It was religion in our house,” Brooks shared, revealing the passion he and his family had for the iconic series.
During the induction ceremony, Brooks has chosen Terry Lickona, the Executive Producer of Austin City Limits, to perform the honors. “He is Austin City Limits. That’s going to be probably my favorite part of tonight,” Brooks stated, adding that he looks forward to the possibility of singing with Trisha Yearwood, his wife, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year.
Brooks admires many past inductees, but one artist who stands out to him is Merle Haggard. Haggard’s contributions to country music have left a lasting impact, and Brooks describes him as a significant influence. “When you talk about entertainment, songwriting, musician—everything that goes into making an artist—Haggard wins it hands down,” he said, underscoring the legacy of Haggard’s work.
Despite a packed schedule of interviews and rehearsals, Brooks makes time to indulge in the city’s famous cuisine. When asked if he preferred tacos or brisket, he cheekily responded, “Yes, and put them both together.” His playful attitude showcases his down-to-earth personality and love for Austin’s food culture.
This evening, Garth Brooks will be the sole focus of the ACL Hall of Fame induction ceremony. It is a unique opportunity for fans and attendees, as this is the first time in the Hall of Fame’s history that one artist will be celebrated in such a manner. The event is officially sold out, reflecting Brooks’ enduring popularity in the music industry.
Musical highlights from the night, along with Brooks’ induction ceremony, will be broadcast in an hour-long special on PBS on September 28. As such an influential figure in the music world, Brooks’ presence in Austin tonight marks a significant tribute to both his career and the legacy of Austin City Limits.
