Austin has given a warm welcome back to one of its oldest and most beloved grocery stores this week, as the H-E-B at 2400 S. Congress Avenue officially reopened its doors. After undergoing a massive renovation, this iconic marketplace is now more modern and exciting than ever, and local shoppers couldn’t wait to show their enthusiasm.
The original H-E-B store first opened its doors way back in 1957, making it the oldest still-operating location in the Austin area. Over the years, this store has seen its fair share of changes, expansions, and renovations. Most recently, it underwent a complete rebuild to transform it into a stunning multi-level complex—a real treat for the community!
On December 4, eager customers began lining up outside long before the reopening, with approximately 500 shoppers braving the rain and campouts overnight to be among the first to step inside. “It was a sight to behold,” said Johnny Mojica, H-E-B’s public affairs manager. “There was joy, energy, excitement, and even tears as they walked into the new store. It was an incredible day for us.”
As customers walk into the new H-E-B, they’re greeted by a stunning reconstruction of the original store’s pylon—a heart-shaped sign that symbolizes the history and dedication H-E-B has for its community. “It was important for us to remember all the customers who supported us over the years,” Mojica continued. “Seeing part of that history as you walk in is a beautiful reminder of our roots.”
The revamped store spans over 145,000 square feet, featuring a spacious two-level design. The first floor hosts plenty of indoor and outdoor dining options, including a delightful True Texas BBQ. The second level is the main shopping area, making it easy for customers to navigate the aisles and find everything they need.
And let’s not forget about parking! The new building boasts an above-ground parking lot with around 500 spaces, ensuring that everyone can find a place to park during busy shopping times.
This historic revisiting of the store signifies bright growth for the Austin community. “We’ve been serving the Austin community for a long time, and opening at our original location highlights just how much the area has changed and developed over the years,” said Mojica. During construction, H-E-B kept their customers happy with a temporary location nearby, ensuring that no one went without their grocery needs.
For those who may not know, H-E-B has had a longstanding footprint in Texas, and its reputation continues to grow. While the chain has become a big player in the Houston area, it is relatively newer there compared to Austin, where its deep roots trace back to the origin of the brand.
The new location is now the second multi-level store in the Central Texas-Austin area! As H-E-B continues to grow, the company also embraces the vibrant culture of Texas by incorporating art installations and sculptures created by local Texas artists throughout the store. With various special concepts like Mi Tienda and Joe V’s in the Houston area, H-E-B remains adaptable to diverse community needs as it expands.
With reported annual sales of $43 billion and over 435 stores operating throughout Texas and Mexico, it’s evident that H-E-B shows no signs of slowing down. So next time you find yourself shopping at the newly reopened store at S. Congress Avenue, take a moment to appreciate the rich history and bright future of this Austin gem!
