Mango-Enthusiasts Rejoice! The Famous Dessert Shop Hui Lau Shan is Set to Open in Austin, Texas

Austin, Texas is about to get a taste of Hong Kong’s dessert culture in the form of Hui Lau Shan, a renowned dessert shop with a focus on mango-based sweet offerings. The Hong Kong-based chain is expected to open its doors in the Crestview neighborhood around mid-May, bringing its signature fast-casual mango desserts to Texans.

What To Expect From Hui Lau Shan

Hui Lau Shan’s dessert masterpieces mainly revolve around the versatile fruit – mango. Their signature dish, the mango chewy ball, is a tantalizing combo of pureed mangos, mango ice cream, and mango tapioca balls. This popular dish is available in several interesting combinations, including a jumbo version, one paired with black sticky rice, and another with mango crystal jellies.

In addition to their mango specials, the dessert shop also offers a range of non-mango items including bird’s nest dishes, radish cakes, and chicken wings. Hence there’s something for every palate!

Hui Lau Shan’s Journey: From an Herbal Tea Shop to Global Dessert Brand

Hui Lau Shan initially started as an herbal tea shop way back in the 1960s, founded by Hui Chi-Yuk. In the 1970s, they expanded their menu to include desserts and other food offerings. The addition of mango sago (mango and coconut tapioca pudding) in 1992 marked a significant turn in their business. This became their main focus and gained them immense popularity.

The successful dessert chain now boasts locations throughout East and Southeast Asia, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the United States. In the US, Hui Lau Shan has made a name for itself with shops in California, Las Vegas, Washington State, and Houston.

Austin’s Thriving Asian Food Scene

Hui Lau Shan’s upcoming Austin location is nestled in the Crestview and Highland region, a part of the city where the pan-Asian food scene is on the rise. The dessert shop will be positioned next to the Houston-import Chinese restaurant Bamboo House, in a spot that was previously occupied by a halal restaurant.

Prospective customers can expect comfortable indoor dining spaces as well as options to place takeout orders in person or online.
