AUSTIN – A deadly accident on Interstate 35 resulted in two fatalities when a car crashed into a construction site and caught fire, according to local law enforcement. The vehicular incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. near Slaughter Lane.
The vehicle reportedly lost control and plunged into an ongoing construction site, hitting a pillar. The impact was so tremendous that the vehicle rapidly burst into flames, leaving no time for the occupants to escape.
Emergency response teams from the Austin-Travis County were on the scene quickly. However, despite their swift response, they were unable to save the two adult occupants of the vehicle, whose identities have been withheld for the time being pending notification of next of kin. The exact cause of the accident, including whether speed or impairment were factors, remains under investigation by the Austin Police Department.
The northbound lanes on I-35 were subsequently closed due to the ongoing investigation and clean-up efforts. Although one lane was later opened by the police, motorists continued to experience significant delays due to residual congestion.
As a result of this tragic accident, traffic on I-35 was significantly affected. The incident led to the northbound lanes’ closure, impacting the morning commute in the sector. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, officers were at the scene working diligently to restore regular traffic flow.
This incident adds to the escalating number of fatal accidents in Austin this year. It also reflects the heightened risks for motorists traveling near construction sites. These areas frequently have less space for vehicles to maneuver and often require sudden changes in speed or direction.
Local traffic authorities continue urging drivers to exercise caution when driving near construction zones to avoid such mishaps and tragic incidents. This highlights a growing call for adherence to speed limits, proper signaling, and safe driving around construction sites to avert potential accidents.
As investigators work to clear the accident scene and establish the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal crash, the incident remains a stark reminder of the importance of vigilant and responsible driving. The departments concerned and road safety promoters alike continue appealing to the public to always adhere to speed limits and other rules of the road, particularly when navigation areas of construction.
Further updates on the investigation and any subsequent safety advisories from Austin’s law enforcement agencies are expected in the coming days.
