ATX Sketch Fest Headliners Joan and Raft Talk Sketch Comedy, Speed on Noah’s Ark, and their Austin Plans

The rising stars of the comedy genre, Joan Haley Ford and Cait Raft, are all set to headline this weekend’s ATX Sketch Fest running from May 23 to May 27. Both comedians have previously written for big league alternatives like Netflix and HBO Max, along with Comedy Central and Cartoon Network.

A Ride on Comedy’s Roller Coaster

Although Joan and Raft are headlining this year, they are no strangers to ATX Sketch Fest. The transgender comedic duo participated in several previous Sketch Fests, working as writers as part of the Upright Citizens Brigade sketch team. They were featured in ASF’s 2020 all-virtual broadcast, under circumstances, they claim, are still unknown. In an email, they expressed: “Austin Sketch Fest has been a huge part of our evolution as comedians. The chance to headline it feels like a full circle moment!”

Treasures of Sketch Comedy

Comedy, in a sketch format, offers Joan and Raft the artistic freedom they crave. Joan, from an early age, had started experimenting with sketch comedy, combining stories like Noah’s Ark with timeless stories like Speed, stating, “The devil put a bomb on the boat!” Her love for sketch comedy also resonated from a simple joy of being able to decide who she wants to play on stage, something traditional performances don’t always allow.

Similarly, Raft found the limitless potential in creating comedy sketches from a young age, often involving friends and family in skits for every occasion. Raft also enjoys being able to play an array of characters and dealing with the technical aspects of the performance, calling herself a “dork who loves theatre.”

Imparting Skills at a Writer’s Workshop

Beyond being performers, the pair will share their writing experience and skills at a writer’s workshop scheduled for Saturday, May 25. Attendees of the workshop can expect to learn collaborative writing exercises and get tips on graceful pitching. As they say: “90% of being in a writer’s room is just being a fun, chill person. We don’t know how to do that, but we can teach you how to fake it really well.”

Queer-Themed Performance

Joan and Raft’s headliner show will be held on Friday, May 24, featuring the local sketch group, Big Fart. Audiences can expect to see performances focusing on trans and queer themes, but the duo also promises to touch on universal feelings, like the strangeness of being alive in this world and the fear of growing older. The dynamic duo has also asked for suggestions on what “gay stuff” to do in Austin, stating, “since we’re both queer and trans, I think that makes our show Austin’s newest hot gay club. So, don’t miss out!”

With the spotlight on them, Joan and Raft are gearing up to give audiences a comedic spectacle that celebrates their identities and humor. Their unique perspective makes ATX Sketch Fest a must-attend event for anyone interested in watching creative and hilarious sketches unfold.
