AUSTIN, Texas — A 30-year-old man is in custody following a chaotic scene at a laundromat in South Austin last Wednesday afternoon. The incident, which took place at approximately 2:10 p.m. at the Spin Zone laundromat, located at 2424 S Congress Ave, involved multiple assaults and threats.
According to an arrest affidavit, the situation began when Devin Chandler allegedly slapped an unsuspecting customer without any provocation. This action escalated into a heated verbal confrontation with a former employee of the laundromat. Witnesses described how the tension quickly rose within the facility, sending customers diving for cover.
Chandler reportedly retrieved a can of pepper spray and a knife from his bag during the altercation. Eyewitnesses stated that he sprayed three individuals multiple times with the pepper spray. The alarming sight of Chandler brandishing a knife caused widespread panic among both customers and employees at the laundromat.
As the aggression escalated, Chandler swung a wet floor sign at a staff member’s head, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the encounter. In a twist of fate, he accidentally cut his own hand while handling the knife he brandished at others.
Witnesses to this disturbing scene reported seeing individuals making frantic calls to the police as the tumult unfolded. Officers arrived on the scene shortly after receiving reports describing the assault in progress, ready to take charge of the alarming situation.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found Chandler still inside the laundromat. Given the volatile nature of the situation, they quickly took him into custody. However, as officers tried to apprehend him, Chandler reportedly made a sudden movement toward his waist, prompting police to deploy a Taser to ensure his compliance.
In the aftermath of the chaotic encounter, emergency medical services were called to the scene. They treated Chandler’s **self-inflicted knife wound** before transporting him to a local hospital for further medical care.
As of now, Chandler is facing several serious charges, including assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in the Travis County Jail with a cumulative bond set at $45,000. Legal actions are likely to follow, given the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Local residents expressed shock and concern over the violent event that unfolded in what is typically a safe area. Many emphasized the need for greater safety measures in public spaces like laundromats, where the community often gathers. Others pointed to the rising tensions in urban areas, which can sometimes escalate into violence.
The event at Spin Zone laundromat serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of public spaces and the importance of remaining vigilant. As investigations continue, the local community hopes for a swift resolution and a return to peaceful interactions.
