This past Friday, volleyball fans at Gregory Gymnasium were in for a nail-biter as the No. 9 ranked Texas Longhorns squared off against the Missouri Tigers. Despite showcasing some incredible talent and determination, the Longhorns found themselves on the losing end of a dramatic five-set match, falling 25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 24-26, and 10-15. This defeat marked the second consecutive five-set loss for Texas, bringing their overall record to 12 wins and 5 losses, with a conference record of 7 wins and 2 losses.

Unforgettable Performances

The standout performer of the match was Madisen Skinner, who captured the spotlight by racking up an impressive 18 kills, alongside 12 crucial digs. This stellar performance not only secured her third double-double of the season but also showcased her versatility on the court. Skinner’s powerful play was complemented by Reagan Rutherford, who contributed 13 kills while hitting an impressive .455. The dynamic duo was vital in the Longhorns’ offense, bringing energy and agility to the game.

But it wasn’t just these two who shined. Marianna Singletary added to the mix with 11 kills and five blocks, proving her worth as a formidable presence at the net. Meanwhile, Devin Kahahawai chipped in with 10 kills and four blocks. This collective effort would give Texas fans plenty of reason to cheer.

Game Highlights

The match began on a high note for the Longhorns, who grabbed an early lead by winning the first set 25-21. Texas paced themselves well, thanks in part to Ayden Ames, who anchored the defense with three blocks. Texas held Missouri to a mere .075 hitting percentage in that opening set, a testament to their strong defensive play. Skinner led the offensive charge with four kills and three digs, hitting a solid .500.

However, the momentum shifted in the second set as Missouri jumped to an 11-3 lead. Despite a valiant comeback effort from the Longhorns, which included a 10-2 run that tied the match at 13, Missouri proved too resilient, finishing strong to claim the second set 25-19.

The third set saw a fierce back-and-forth battle, with both teams tied at 13 for a stretch. But Texas found their rhythm and pulled away with a 4-0 run, ultimately closing out the set with a fantastic hitting percentage of .472, their best performance in that category during the match.

Just when it seemed like Texas would secure the match, Missouri fought back, edging out the Longhorns in the fourth set with a narrow 26-24 win. This thrilling comeback sent the match into a decisive fifth set, where unfortunately for Texas fans, Missouri completed the upset and sealed their victory.
