A man was left injured early Monday morning in the city of Austin after choosing a commercial dumpster as his resting place. The unintended surprise came when the particular waste bin was emptied into a garbage truck in an early morning pick up, leaving the man with serious injuries.
Cpt. Christa Stedman, the public information officer for Austin-Travis County EMS, noted the man was able to summon the strength to climb out of the trash, making his way on top of the garbage collection truck. Unfortunately, due to the injuries sustained from the event, getting down safely proved to be a challenge.
The emergency medics responded to the unpredictable scene at the 500 block of Congress Avenue just shy of 3:40 a.m., swiftly transporting the injured man to Dell Seton Medical Center.
The truck drivers, noticing the incident immediately, stopped the truck as soon as the man fell out. They quickly dialed 911 resulting in a swift response from the authorities.
Lisa Cortinas, the public information officer for the Austin Fire Department, verified that firefighters were rapidly deployed to the scene to aid the man. Using a ground ladder, the rescue team was successfully able to get the man down from the top of the vehicle.
While this story serves as a painful reminder of the harsh realities that face urban homeless populations, it also underlines the importance of quick response and efficient coordination between emergency services. Episodes like these spotlight the necessity for a more proactive approach in providing resources and means to cater to those facing homelessness in our community.
As Austin starts its journey into another day, the echoes from the unusual event in the wee hours of the morning are sure to elicit thought, provoke discussion, and hopefully drive initiatives that aim to forge pathways to more viable solutions for the city’s homeless population.
