In a surprising revelation, Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department Director, Kimberly McNeeley has taken everyone by surprise by submitting her resignation. After serving the city in various capacities for an impressive duration of 14 years, McNeeley made the unexpected yet decisive move to leave her organization.
The Interim City Manager Jesús Garza announced this news in a memorandum to the city’s mayor and the city council on a late Thursday evening. McNeeley plans to dedicate the month of May to aiding with the transition before bringing her illustrious tenure to an end in early June.
Garza lauded McNeeley for her remarkable contributions towards the progression and expansion of the department. She was noted for her invaluable role in crisis management and emergency response maneuvers that the city has faced over the years.
In addition, McNeeley’s dedication was put to the test when she assumed the challenging task of Interim Animal Services Officer back in 2019. Despite juggling multiple roles, she has consistently advocated for animal adoption from the Animal Center, proving her passion extends beyond her principal duties.
There was slight speculation about McNeeley being considered for a leading role at the Trail Conservancy, but Garza’s memorandum made no such confirmation.
In Garza’s words, “We know our Parks and Recreation programs and services play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for Austinites. Director McNeeley recognizes the importance of these resources and their impact on the community. She is excited to continue contributing to the growth and development of the park system, even as she moves on from her current role.”
As McNeeley plans her departure, one cannot help but reflect on her significant imprint on the Austin community. Her passion for Austin’s green spaces and dedication to enhancing the city’s environment will certainly be remembered.
While Austinites await final word on McNeeley’s future endeavors, the community is already feeling the bittersweet notes of her departure. As she prepares to move on, there are high hopes that her replacement will uphold the same commitment and dedication McNeeley consistently brought to the table.
