YouTuber mxmtoon Celebrates 24th Birthday With Headlining Gig in Austin

A Night to Remember at Emo’s

On Monday night, YouTuber mxmtoon, also known as Maia, graced Austin with her presence by choosing to spend her 24th birthday headlining a show at Emo’s. “That beats any song I could end the set with,” mxmtoon said tearfully after her band and the Austin concert audience cheerfully sang her Happy Birthday. The young artist, who is currently supporting the pop band AJR on a 25-show tour, decided to perform an additional four headliner shows, one of which coincided with her birthday eve.

mxmtoon’s Performance Shines

mxmtoon captured the audience with her unique blend of upbeat sad music and stellar ukulele acoustics, characteristics that her fans have come to adore. She enlivened her under-90-minute performance by prancing energetically across the stage in bright red cowboy boots, backed by a three-person band. Maia also unveiled two unreleased tracks from her upcoming album, adding a spark of anticipation to the night. The simple yet catching stage lighting, combined with the projected star images, beautifully encapsulated her signature lo-fi style.

Gig Starts with “fever dream”

The concert kicked off with the song “fever dream,” where Maia deftly alluded to her rising success in the lyrics “I want something more than / More than restless mornings.” The energy of the audience gradually mounted as she played viral hits including “prom dress” and “cliché.” Seemingly in sync with the crowd’s excitement, mxmtoon often broke into gleeful smiles as the attendees passionately provided backing vocals.

Surprise Unreleased Songs

The artist then surprised her fans by introducing two unreleased songs from her upcoming album. Song, “i hate texas,” was met with warm applause and cheers from the audience each time Texas or Austin was mentioned. This irony was not lost on folks as the song’s theme was echoed on the singer’s merch table with themed tote bags and her fan-gifted, pink-feathered cowboy hat tagged ‘Austin, TX.’ The second song, “passenger side,” inspired by Maia’s lack of a driving license, also received a positive reaction.

Birthday Celebrations

As the event neared its close, following a ceremonial sip of water, the drummer stole the opportunity to serenade mxmtoon with a band and crowd rendition of Happy Birthday. During this heartfelt moment, Maia warmly embraced her mom, who had brought a brightly lit birthday cake on stage. mxmtoon expressed her gratefulness, stating, “It’s not every day you get to celebrate with hundreds of people.”

A Perfect Ending

mxmtoon perfectly sealed the night by reverting back to her initial theme of longing for more. During the performance of her final song “mona lisa,” the audience swung their arms and lit flashlights in the air, enthusiastically begging for an encore that echoed the longing and perception of mxmtoon’s music.
