Tuesday, April 2, 2024, brought surprising news from Austin’s political scene. Former Planning Commission Chair Todd Shaw has declared his candidature for the soon-to-be-vacated District 7 seat. Shaw is the fifth candidate joining the race for the City Council chair, place that Leslie Pool is not going to contend.
According to a press statement from Shaw’s campaign, his main agenda is prioritizing more housing options with an emphasis on consensus and collaboration. At the same time, he also pledges to focus on improving infrastructure.
Shaw said, “We must improve our infrastructure in a way that prepares for the changing climate such as increased flooding, drought, and wildfires with a focus on protecting the most vulnerable populations.”
Shaw emphasized on infrastructure resilience and its importance in public safety in Austin and other major cities, projecting it as a concern that’ll top the public safety issues in the coming years. He said, his environmental and construction experience will provide missing expertise in the Council to address these issues.
Entering the race, Shaw faces competition from Edwin Bautista of Texas Housers; Pierre Nguyễn, a Public Safety and Asian American Quality of Life commissioner, firefighter, and EMT; Adam Powell, a union organizer and SAFE Alliance board member; and former congressional Democratic nominee Mike Siegel, who co-founded Ground Game Texas.
These candidates have been accumulating support within the community and have declared their commitment to addressing issues at the intersection between the local government and the Austin community.
With District 7’s council seat up for grabs, this election cycle becomes more competitive and exciting. It will be revealing to see how the fortunes turn for these candidates and the District 7 community.
