In an exciting development for local food enthusiasts, one of Austin’s favorite Chinese restaurants from the last decade has found a fresh new home across town. Restaurateur William Wong opened New Fortune 2 on Thursday, located at 12300 FM 620 near Anderson Mill Road.
Wong and his partners navigated the tightrope of endurance when they had to close down the original New Fortune restaurant in 2021. The pandemic took a heavy toll on many businesses, especially within the restaurant industry, leaving many with no choice but to shut their doors. New Fortune was one such casualty of these unprecedented times.
Despite the setback, Wong brought the restaurant back to life, banking on the popularity and fondness that patrons had for the first New Fortune. With the pandemic gradually losing its grip, the time seemed ripe for a second stint at the restaurant business.
The previous home of Jenna’s Asian Kitchen now bears the sign of New Fortune 2, standing as a testament to the resiliency and passion of Wong and his team.
Of course, it’s the cuisine that truly speaks volumes about a restaurant’s authenticity. And at New Fortune 2, the sound is melodious indeed. The daily dim sum menu boasts more than two dozen dishes, including delicacies like Shanghai soup dumplings, pan-fried shrimp-leek cake, and scallop dumplings.
Roving dim sum carts promise to be a highlight for many, charming diners into a culinary journey, particularly on weekends
Entrée selections offer a glance at the extensive Chinese culinary range, featuring over 70 dishes. Among the highlights are mouth-watering options such as Peking style pork ribs, walnut shrimp, and Vietnamese shaking beef. The menu is rounded off with an exciting hot pot selection offering five unique choices.
To make weekdays a bit more extraordinary, New Fortune 2 offers lunch specials ($11-$15), served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The “Hunan Style” dishes make an appearance with classics like General Tso’s chicken or broccoli with beef, alongside “Hong Kong Style” delights like salt-and-pepper pork ribs and sautéed clam with black bean sauce. Each dish comes with an accompanying egg roll and the diner’s choice of soup and rice.
New Fortune 2 has designated the hours of 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday as well as 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the weekends, providing ample time for patrons to indulge in their offerings.
In a display of resilience, the revival of New Fortune 2 stands as a beacon of hope for all restaurants caverned by the pandemic’s impact. With foodies across Austin anxiously awaiting their opening, the forecast for New Fortune 2 is filled with hope, delectable dim sum, and more than a pinch of delight.
