New Heights High School Opens to Empower Fort Worth Adults
Fort Worth, Texas, is buzzing with excitement following the grand opening of New Heights High School, the first public school in the state offering dual enrollment for adults. Located in the Tarrant County College (TCC) Opportunity Center in Stop Six, this innovative institution is designed specifically for adults aged 18 to 50 who are looking to improve their education and job prospects.
A Fresh Start for Many
With around seven million Texas adults lacking a high school diploma, educational initiatives like New Heights are pivotal. In Fort Worth alone, a staggering 39% of adults do not have a diploma, and amongst them, 35% live below the poverty line. The leaders behind New Heights High School hope to change this narrative by providing an educational pathway that leads to better job opportunities.
At New Heights, students have the chance to earn their high school diploma while also gaining valuable career certifications and college credits—all at no cost! This multifaceted approach aims to open doors to higher-paying jobs, allowing students to build a brighter future for themselves and their families.
Opening Day Celebration
The launch of New Heights was met with a warm welcome from the community. Governor Greg Abbott, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker, and Mayor Pro Tempore Gyna Bivens were in attendance, celebrating what promises to be a significant step toward improving educational and career opportunities for adults in the area.
More Students than Expected!
Originally, the school anticipated enrolling about 350 students for its opening, but that number was blown out of the water when 500 students showed up on the first day! Even more impressively, over 1,400 additional people are in the process of enrolling, signaling a great demand for this type of adult education.
Flexible Learning Opportunities
The schedule at New Heights High School is tailored to accommodate adult learners. As one student, Aric Dunmore, shared in a press release, “I am able to take night classes which is great for my schedule because I work in the morning. I’m getting my education and am still able to be a father to my kids and a husband to my wife, so it’s perfect.”
This flexibility allows students to balance their educational pursuits with family and work commitments, making it much easier to fit learning into their busy lives.
