New Heights High School Opens in Fort Worth, Offering Hope to Adults Seeking Education

Fort Worth residents gathered with excitement earlier this week as the city welcomed its newest educational opportunity—New Heights High School. This innovative school is making headlines as Texas’ first public institution offering dual enrollment for adults, and it sits snugly within the Tarrant County College (TCC) Opportunity Center in Stop Six. Aiming to help those aged 18 to 50, New Heights is here to give a fresh start to adults who aspire to earn their high school diplomas, career certifications, and even college credits—all for free.

A Community Celebration

Local leaders, including Governor Greg Abbott, Mayor Mattie Parker, and Mayor Pro Tempore Gyna Bivens, were present during the grand opening, radiating hope and enthusiasm for the new educational venture. New Heights is stepping up in a city where a staggering 39% of adults lack a high school diploma, and among these individuals, 35% live below the poverty line. The opening of this school signifies a promising change for many in the community who are ready to break the cycle of limited opportunities.

Setting an Ambitious Course

Initially, school leaders anticipated starting the year with around 350 students. To their delight, they discovered that over 500 students enrolled by the time classes began in early September! But that’s not all—more than 1,400 additional students are currently in the enrollment process, showing just how much this program is in demand.

Real Voices, Real Stories

One of the students, Aric Dunmore, shared his enthusiasm for the flexible learning schedule. “I am able to take night classes which is great for my schedule because I work in the morning,” he stated in a press release. “I’m getting my education and am still able to be a father to my kids and a husband to my wife, so it’s perfect.” Aric’s story embodies the essence of what New Heights High School aims to accomplish.

Why this Matters

Education is a powerful tool, and New Heights recognizes that many adults need a second chance at success. With approximately seven million adults in Texas lacking a high school diploma, initiatives like this one are critical in bridging educational gaps. The school not only focuses on academic achievement but also on equipping its students with the necessary skills to pursue higher-paying jobs upon graduation.

More Than Just a School

What sets New Heights apart from previous initiatives is its commitment to dual enrollment. While Texas saw its first adult charter high school open in Austin back in 2014, New Heights is the first to provide an opportunity for adults to earn college credits while completing their high school education. This approach supports both educational enrichment and career readiness.

A Bright Future Ahead

The combination of earning a high school diploma, attaining career certifications, and gaining college credits from TCC paints a hopeful picture for many. As New Heights High School opens its doors wider, it holds the potential to change lives, uplift families, and strengthen the Fort Worth community. The positive ripple effect could reshape workforce demographics and minimize poverty levels through education.

Looking Forward

With the overwhelming interest and support from both city leaders and the community, New Heights High School seems poised for a successful journey ahead. As more and more adults step back into the academic environment, the future looks promising. Who knows? The next notable stories of success from Fort Worth could be just around the corner!
