New Train Tracks Planned for East Austin

The city of Austin is gearing up for an exciting upgrade to its public transportation system. Capital Metro has unveiled plans to construct a second set of train tracks along the Red Line in East Austin. This new addition will improve not only the train service but also the overall infrastructure around the area. The project will include new sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and an additional platform at Plaza Saltillo Station.

What is a Double-Track?

These new tracks, also known as a double-track, will allow trains to travel in both directions simultaneously. This is an important feature because it can significantly improve the frequency and reliability of train service for riders. Last year, a similar double-track was successfully opened between Lakeline and Leander stations, marking the first major rail upgrade as part of the Project Connect transit expansion.

Project Details

The planned double-track in East Austin will stretch approximately 0.7 miles from east of Robert T. Martinez Jr. Street to Onion Street. On Monday, the transit agency’s board of directors voted to authorize CEO Dottie Watkins to finalize a deal with the city of Austin for the project. This agreement will include various street upgrades that go beyond just the train tracks project.

City Upgrades

As part of the partnership, the city will focus on installing new continuous sidewalks along East Fifth Street. There will be enhanced crosswalks, including necessary safety improvements at Navasota and Comal Streets. Additionally, there will be new raised crossings at both Onion and Robert T. Martinez Jr. Streets, as well as crossing islands at Chicon Street and Robert T. Martinez.

Furthermore, a continuous trail along the southern side of the track will be integrated into the design. East Fifth Street will also see some changes, as it will be narrowed, repaved, and converted into a one-way street for cars from Navasota Street to Chicon Street. A new platform at Plaza Saltillo will be added, measuring 280 feet in length.

Construction Timeline

Plans indicate that detailed designs for the project will be developed in 2025, with construction expected to begin in 2026. The entire undertaking is anticipated to last around two years.

Funding for the Project

The financial backing for this initiative comes largely from the federal government, which is covering more than half the cost of the $32.2 million double-tracking project. Capital Metro was awarded an $18 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The remaining expenses will primarily be funded by Capital Metro, while the city of Austin has committed to contribute at least $900,000 towards its segment of the project.
