Chipmaker NXP Unveils Its Smart Home Lab at Oak Hill Facility

Dutch Semiconductor Company Showcases Its Commitment to Innovation in Austin

Austin, TX – Known for its cutting-edge approach to technological development, Dutch semiconductor company NXP has recently unveiled its Smart Home Innovation Lab in Austin’s Oak Hill neighborhood. The company celebrated the grand opening of this innovative facility on May 22, reflecting NXP’s commitment to driving growth and innovation in Austin.

A Fully Furnished Smart Home Lab

Unlike your average laboratory, the new NXP lab mirrors a fully furnished home. It features an entryway, garage, kitchen, bedroom, fitness room, and media centre – all equipped with advanced smart home technologies ready for testing.

The entryway doors use new face recognition and fingerprint technology for unlocking the doors. In contrast, the bedroom is equipped with a queen-sized bed programmed to monitor the user’s heart rate and adapt the room’s temperature during sleep. Throughout the house, voice assistant technology allows intuitive control over lights, blinds, televisions, and other features using voice commands. All these smart features operate on a local neural processing unit, providing enhanced speed and reliability, especially during internet outages.

How NXP’s Smart Home Lab Works?

Instead of operating purely as a manufacturer, NXP collaborates with other renowned brands such as Sleep Number and Honeywell to integrate its microchip technology into everyday products. This strategic approach enables companies building these products to provide a unique selling proposition for their customers, said Ron Martino, NXP’s executive vice president and chief sales officer. While many NXP smart-home products are immediately available for purchase, others are still undergoing comprehensive product testing.

Testimonial from the CTO

Speaking about the newly established lab, Lars Reger, executive vice president and Chief Technology Officer at NXP, said, “We have built a truly unique space in Austin that is designed from the ground up on fostering joint collaboration and innovation. This Smart Home lab truly exemplifies our vision of bringing bright minds together to pioneer new breakthrough technologies for a world that is better, safer, and more secure.”

This new smart-home lab represents NXP’s ongoing commitment to developing and innovating smart-home technologies, an industry expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. By providing a real-life environment for product testing and collaboration, NXP is not only furthering its research and development capabilities but also supporting Austin’s local tech industry.

Support for the groundbreaking work of companies like NXP continues to be invaluable for technological advancement. Your donations contribute significantly to maintaining the journalistic mission across Texas.
