On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, tragedy struck in Austin when a woman allegedly drove her car into several pedestrians before crashing into a food truck, sparking a fire. The incident occurred around 4:21 p.m. in the 2500 block of Elmont Drive, leaving the community stunned and seeking answers.
The Austin Police Department received an initial call from a woman claiming that her phone had been stolen. This call prompted officers to respond to the situation on Elmont Drive, near South Pleasant Valley Road. However, searching for any potential suspects yielded no results. Approximately 10 minutes later, police were alerted to a much more serious incident in the same area, which required urgent attention.
Upon arriving at the new scene, officers discovered a chaotic situation. They encountered four individuals who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle, alongside a food truck that was engulfed in flames. Two of the injured pedestrians were quickly transported to a nearby hospital, with one person suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
As the investigation progressed, it became clear that the woman who made the initial call was acting out of anger. Reports indicate she was upset with the suspect and attempted to strike the person. Unfortunately, this resulted in the woman hitting not only her intended target but also several innocent bystanders before colliding with the food truck. In a terrifying escalation, the suspect then allegedly threatened an individual at the food truck with a knife.
The situation took an even stranger turn when police learned that the suspect’s accusation against the person she believed had stolen her phone was misplaced. After further investigation, it was confirmed that the accused individual did not have the phone in their possession, which remains unaccounted for. Initially thought to be the father of the suspect’s child, police now say that no personal connections exist between the suspect and any of the victims involved in the incident.
Authorities have described the suspect as a Hispanic woman, standing approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. The vehicle involved is reported to be a gray or tan Toyota SUV. Following the events of that day, the woman faces serious criminal charges, including aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and failure to stop and render aid after a crash.
Emergency responders from Austin-Travis County EMS and the Austin Fire Department quickly arrived on the scene to provide assistance. Victims received necessary medical treatment, and firefighters worked to extinguish the flames from the food truck.
While this shocking incident has raised concerns within the community, local authorities have stated that it is believed to be an isolated case without any ongoing threat to public safety. The victims of the crash have not been publicly identified but are all reported to be adults.
As the investigation remains active, police urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward. They can contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-5245 or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.
