Austin Community Remembers Beloved Educator and Family Man Michael Paul McCarty
The heart of Austin is filled with sorrow as we gather to remember a true legend, Michael Paul McCarty, who passed away on January 6, 2025. He left us surrounded by his loving wife, Pat, leaving behind a legacy that will forever warm the hearts of those who knew him.
A Life Well-Lived
Michael entered this world on November 9, 1946, in Amarillo, Texas, but his youthful years were spent in the neighboring town of Dumas. After graduating from high school, he set his sights on higher education at Texas Tech University, where he not only earned his degree but also met his lifelong partner, Pat, in 1969. Their bond sparked a lifelong journey filled with love, laughter, and, of course, a few dad jokes!
Following his graduation from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in 1973, Michael served honorably as a Captain in the Air Force in Wichita, Kansas. After his military service, he founded a successful dental practice in San Antonio. Yet, in 1979, his adventure brought him to Austin, where he quickly became renowned for his compassionate approach to patient care—a testament to his kind-hearted nature.
A Family Man at Heart
In addition to being a skilled dentist, Michael was an incredible family man. He cherished his role as a father to his three children, Brian, Kimberly, and Jeff. Michael devoted his time to coaching their sports teams, celebrating their accomplishments, and being the ultimate cheering section for his kids. His legacy continues through his loving family, including his son Brian, daughter-in-law Casey, and their three boys, Gavin, Liam, and Finn. His daughter Kimberly also carries on his spirit with her husband Scott and their sons, Jackson and Caleb, along with his son Jeff and wife Lauren.
Michael’s love extended beyond his immediate family to his cherished role as a devoted “Papa.” He took immense pride in his grandchildren’s achievements, both academically and on the field, and he found joy in discussing University of Texas sports with anyone willing to listen. As an Eagle Scout, Michael maintained a deep love for the great outdoors. His favorite destinations included the stunning landscapes of Big Bend, the Texas Hill Country, and Colorado.
A Voice to Remember
With a remarkable voice developed during his days as a radio DJ in Dumas, Michael was never shy about sharing his “Mike-isms” and dad jokes. He had a special knack for finding front-row parking spots, bringing convenience and a smile to the family outings. His infectious laughter and warm presence left a lasting impression on his community, as well as on his patients, who often referred to him as “the gentle giant.”
Celebrating His Life
While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the vibrant life Michael lived. Graveside services are scheduled for January 17, 2025, where friends and family will gather to remember and honor him. Additionally, a celebration of life is planned for when the bluebonnets bloom, providing a beautiful backdrop reminiscent of Michael’s love for nature.
A true animal lover and supporter of his community, Michael’s family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Austin Humane Society, various animal rescue organizations, or Tarrytown United Methodist Church, causes that were very close to his heart.
In Our Hearts Forever
Michael Paul McCarty will be deeply missed by the Austin community, his family, friends, and everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. His spirit will continue to inspire kindness, laughter, and love in all corners of our lives. Rest in peace, dear Michael—you truly made a difference in our world.
