In a generous move by Austin Shakespeare and the University of Austin, the classical love story of Romeo and Juliet is now accessible to Austin’s theatre enthusiasts free of charge! The performances are lined up for Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays starting from May 23 through June 9 at the revered Curtain Theater.
Romeo and Juliet, arguably one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated works, follows the tragic love story of Romeo (from the House of Montague) and Juliet (a Capulet). Despite being part of feuding families, both characters find themselves infatuated with each other at first sight. They secretly marry with the hope of putting an end to the ongoing family feud. As the tale unwinds, the young couple becomes victims of their families’ clashing interests, duties, and their own profound love, provoking the question: What price must be paid to end the familial animosity?
In a fresh twist, the timeless tale is set in the aesthetics of the 1930s, drawing inspirations from the period crime drama “Peaky Blinders”. The accompanying music is an aural treat indeed, featuring both live and recorded music from the mid 20th century and the 1930s.
While admission to the play is free, seats can only be reserved online and well ahead of the scheduled performance dates. Use this link to reserve your seats.
