Landmark Decision: Austin Saves Historic Building!
Austin has just scored a major win for history and culture! The city council has officially voted to designate the building at 1500 E. 12th St. as a landmark, putting a halt to plans for its demolition by Eureka Holdings. This iconic structure, which dates back at least to 1911, holds significant ties to both German immigrants and the vibrant Black East Austin community.
A Community United
What a ride it has been! The outpouring of support from locals has been incredible, with more than 1,500 people signing a petition organized by Preservation Austin. They rallied the troops to demand that the city protect this charming piece of Austin’s past, and it looks like their voices have been heard!
For years, this building has sat vacant and in need of love. It was scooped up back in 2016 by the Dallas-based real estate developer, Eureka Holdings. This developer owns several properties on the bustling East 12th Street Corridor—one of which is the popular Outer Heaven Disco Club, which has also faced closure. It’s a bittersweet saga: while progress is often necessary, the community’s heart aches at the prospect of losing cherished local venues.
Preservation Efforts in Full Swing
Looking at the bright side, Preservation Austin is stepping up to the plate! They’ve announced plans to work with Eureka to ensure that 1500 E. 12th St. is restored thoughtfully and returned to its rightful place as a valued community asset. Meghan King, a policy and outreach planner with the organization, expressed optimism when she said, “We would love to work with the neighborhood on a vision to preserve all of East 12th Street if there is energy behind that, in addition to ensuring that 1500 East 12th is restored and occupied.”
Support Our Local Scene! Kenny Dorham’s Backyard
In addition to saving historic spots, Austin continues to support its artistic community in various ways. On that note, don’t forget about Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, an outdoor venue that has been a staple for local music and culture. Named after the legendary jazz trumpeter who grew up right here, this venue is accepting donations through the end of the year. It has long been on a quest for funds to maintain its stage, food trucks, and community gardens.
The team behind Kenny Dorham’s Backyard emphasized, “Everything you give goes directly to support the live music, art markets, and other community events we put on that enrich the Austin African American Cultural Heritage District.” This is a chance for all of us to pitch in and help keep that vibrant spirit alive!
Time to Rally Behind Our Community
As Austin marches toward growth and development, it’s also crucial to remember the history and rich tapestry of its neighborhoods. The designation of 1500 E. 12th St. as a landmark is a leap forward for preserving the cultural memory of the city. There’s no doubt that the buzz and excitement over this decision are just the beginning!
