Austin, brace yourselves for an eventful weather turn as meteorologists predict severe storms and heavy rains to grapple with the city on Friday. With hail possibly as large as two inches in diameter, attendees of the South by Southwest (SXSW) concerts might want to reconsider their plans.
Predictions by Jason Runyen and Matt Brady, meteorologists at the National Weather Service, anticipate two rounds of scattered storms on Friday; one from 5 to 10 a.m. and a later round from 2 to 9 p.m. Accompanying these storms could be potentially destructive hail, heavy rain, strong wind, and in some instances, tornadoes.
A mild cold front is also on the cards, with temperatures expected to dip into the low 60s by Saturday morning. Austin has been put on level 2, or a “slight risk,” for heavy rain that could possibly cause rapid onset flooding on Friday and Saturday. Rain and severe storm chances will remain throughout the weekend, clearing up only by Monday.
