Residents of Austin are being advised to brace for severe weather conditions this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Bastrop, Caldwell and Hays counties until 8 p.m. Friday, with potential for storms to continue into the weekend.
The incoming cold front is expected to bring with it multiple rounds of storms, including the possibility of hail larger than 2 inches. Meteorologist Nick Hampshire has indicated that damaging winds and lightning are all possible outcomes as the system moves through the area. In addition, flash flooding due to heavy rainfall is a concern.
“The slightly higher chances [of severe weather] will be south of Austin, but the city of Austin is in that level 2 of 5 risk for severe weather,” Hampshire said.
Most of the area’s severe weather risk is slated between 2 and 10 p.m. on Friday.
While the severe weather is expected primarily during Friday afternoon and evening, there are also chances of rain and storm continuing into the weekend.
These weather fluctuations have significant implications for local life in Austin. Apart from the potential property damage from hail and high winds, the chance of flash flooding could pose a serious risk to low-lying areas and those near water bodies. Residents are recommended to secure loose outdoor items, trim overhanging tree branches, and clear rain gutters and drains to prevent water buildup on their properties.
Residents are being urged to stay safe and informed. They should keep up with the latest weather updates and heed the advice of local authorities. Those living in areas prone to flooding are urged to have an emergency plan in place. Moreover, residents should keep emergency supplies such as water, canned food, a first aid kit, flashlight, and batteries at hand.
As Austin prepares to ride out the storm, all eyes are on the changing skies and the anticipation of what the weekend weather will bring. It is a stark reminder that whilst we may try to predict and control many aspects of life, nature invariably asserts its own unpredictable agenda.
