The community of Austin comes together to mourn the recent youth shootings.
Austin is reeling from the tragic loss of two teenage boys, Matthew Pichardo and Derick Fajardo-Reyes, who were shot and killed just days apart. Their deaths mark the city’s 10th and 11th homicides of the year, raising urgent concerns about youth safety and gun violence. Authorities have arrested one suspect connected to Pichardo’s shooting while the other remains at large. The community is mourning these losses, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures and initiatives aimed at violence reduction.
Austin is grappling with a wave of violence following two separate incidents in which two teenage boys were shot and killed within days of each other. The Austin Police Department (APD) has classified these tragic occurrences as homicides, marking the city’s 10th and 11th homicides of the year.
The first shooting took place on March 31, when 16-year-old Matthew Pichardo was found unresponsive on Bradsher Drive at approximately 10 p.m. Emergency services received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting at that location. Upon arrival, investigators discovered Pichardo had suffered from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at 10:34 p.m.
In the second incident, 15-year-old Derick Fajardo-Reyes was discovered around 3 a.m. on Monday, seated in a black car that had crashed into a utility pole on Harrisglenn Drive in Tech Ridge. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:17 a.m.
The loss of these two young lives is being felt deeply within their families and the broader Austin community. Friends, classmates, and community members are grappling with the aftermath of violence that has particularly impacted the youth. The families of both boys are mourning their losses, as each was reportedly well-liked and held promising futures.
In response to the shooting of Matthew Pichardo, a juvenile male suspect has been apprehended. The suspect turned himself in shortly after fleeing the scene and has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Pichardo’s death. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In the case of Derick Fajardo-Reyes, the suspect responsible for his shooting remains at large. Police are actively searching for an unidentified female who was reportedly with Fajardo-Reyes prior to the shooting. This lack of information has prompted law enforcement to urge anyone with insights or details to contribute to the investigation.
The violence has raised concerns within the community about youth safety and gun violence in Austin. The APD is aware that these recent incidents contribute to a growing concern regarding public safety and the protection of minors. The rising number of homicides this year may prompt city leaders to reconsider community safety measures and crime prevention strategies.
Police continue their investigation into the shootings, with a particular focus on finding the suspect linked to Derick Fajardo-Reyes’s death. Authorities are encouraging the public to provide any information that could assist in locating the suspect through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. As investigations progress, community outreach programs aimed at violence reduction may also be implemented to address the rising concerns about youth violence in Austin.
The recent shootings serve as a grim reminder of the impact of gun violence on families and communities. The APD and local leaders may need to work collaboratively with the community to foster awareness, support, and preventive measures against such tragedies in the future.
