Austin – Tragedy struck Friday afternoon in south Austin when a vehicle was hit by a train. According to the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS), one person was pronounced dead on the scene. The fatal accident took place at around 4:30 p.m. at 1700 Matthews Lane, near Menchaca Road.
Details about the incident are still sketchy, but the authorities confirmed that a train-versus-vehicle collision took place. The accident involved only one person who was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The ATCEMS medics rushed to the scene to try and save the person caught in the crash. Despite their efforts and attempts at resuscitation, however, the person was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after 5 p.m.
The Austin Fire Department was also in attendance at the crash site, aiding the ATCEMS first responders in their duties. Due to the severity of the accident, several roads were closed to protect the crash scene investigation. The road blocks led to significant traffic delays. Austin Police warned motorists to expect these hold-ups and advised them to seek alternate routes.
In a social media post, the Austin Police Department announced that Dittmar Road and Matthews Lane would remain closed due to the train-vehicle collision. The closures could last till late Friday night or possibly even longer.
No further details about the fatal incident have been released to the public as of now. The roads are expected to remain closed while investigators analyze the crash scene and establish the circumstances leading up to the tragic incident.
