Austin, Texas: Stars Café to Close After 58 Years Amid I-35 Expansion
Austin is set to lose a beloved late-night eatery, Stars Café, commonly referred to as Star Seeds, which has been a cherished fixture for nearly 60 years. The iconic diner is closing its doors at its current location along Interstate 35 and will relocate due to the ongoing expansion project led by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
History and Impact of Expansion
The I-35 expansion project has been a hot topic in Austin for several years. Originally discussed in 2021, the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion near downtown Austin, but it has also resulted in the displacement of long-standing businesses and local residents. Recent reports reveal that TxDOT is not only moving forward with the construction plans but has also sought to acquire land from displaced businesses through legal measures.
“Every one of these businesses has a story,” said Miriam Schoenfield, a member of the board for advocacy group Rethink 35. “Every one that we lose is a tragedy, so this is not the way forward. This is the way backwards.”
Public Response
The closure of Stars Café strikes a chord with many loyal customers. Juan Sanchez, who has frequented the diner for over 13 years, shared his sentiments, “It’s always been that place where it’s like oh, it’s 12:00. Where do you wanna go? Oh, let’s go to Star Seeds. Seeing the change … to me it’s not a big deal, because Austin’s always adapting.”
The timeline for the I-35 expansion indicates that construction in the university section here Stars Café is located is expected to begin in 2027. However, opponents of the project argue that it would lead to further traffic issues instead of resolving them. Schoenfield added, “This project is just based on an outdated practice that will create more traffic nightmares and has never, ever worked.”
Stars Café’s Unique Flavor
Stars Café has always celebrated its unique identity as a place that welcomes all. Manager Jetara Robertson expressed their commitment to diversity in hiring back in February 2023, saying, “We’ve always been that place where we even hire people where they might not get these jobs at their fancier restaurant because they might not fit the mold. You want Austin to change, you want Austin to expand, but you also want to be able to keep your heart.”
A Fond Farewell
As the café prepares to say goodbye to its old home, they took to social media on October 10 to confirm their closure on November 10, stating that the decision stemmed from the I-35 expansion. Their post highlighted the café’s role as more than just a place to eat but as a “gathering spot of the Amazing and the not so amazing”, a place for countless cherished memories.
“Whether you loved us, hated us, were sick of us, or would give up a spleen to see us remain, we appreciate you for ever gracing your presence through our doors,” the café said, thanking their customers for nearly six decades of support. They promised to serve “one last pancake or one last cup of coffee or one last chicken fried steak that you will cherish” during their final month of service at I-35.
Looking Ahead
Stars Café has not yet revealed where they will be moving, but they assured fans that more information will be shared after their closure. “Thank you for 58 wonderful years,” they stated. “We look forward to creating new memories with you in our new home.”
The closure of Stars Café is yet another example of the changes occurring in Austin as the city tries to balance growth with preserving its unique character. The café will surely be missed by many who found joy and solace in its quirky charm.
As Austin continues to grow, the discussions surrounding the I-35 expansion project and its impact on local businesses will likely remain a point of contention. Only time will tell how the city navigates these changes and what new memories will be forged in the future.
