In a touching move for the small town of Swedeborg, Missouri, residents have come together to honor a local hero. Earlier this year, the community decided to name the primary building at Swedeborg District III Elementary School after Claudene Wilson, a dedicated custodian who has worked at the school for over 30 years.
The decision to name the building the Claudene Wilson Learning Center was made on August 26, during a meeting of the Swedeborg School Board. The board voted unanimously, with members expressing their admiration for Wilson’s unwavering commitment to the school and its students.
Student Nate Lein pointed out that the name had to reflect someone special, saying, “It has to be someone that you just know would be right.” Many names were tossed around, including famous national figures and notable Missourians, but in the end, Wilson stood out as the perfect choice.
Wilson’s contributions to the school go far beyond her job description as a custodian. Over the past three decades, she has embraced a variety of roles that showcase her dedication. This includes greeting students every morning, coordinating transportation, helping during lunch duty, landscaping, and managing facility operations. “The next thing I know, I was leaving at six in the morning and getting home about 7:30 at night,” Wilson shared, regarding her extensive work schedule.
She attributes her commitment to the school to her love for the students. “Kids, the kids is at your heart,” Wilson said, clearly showing that her motivation comes from wanting to ensure that the children have a safe and welcoming environment.
The school board president, Chuck Boren, highlighted Wilson’s role in the lives of students: “These kids get sick; you think they go to the nurse to start with? They go to her. If they had a bad night, they go to her. And she’s there for each and every one of them.” This dedication has not gone unnoticed and has helped forge an unbreakable bond between Wilson and the school community.
In many cases across the U.S., buildings and institutions are named after notable figures known for their national achievements. However, in Swedeborg, greatness is defined differently. Student Alex Lein is inspired by Wilson and expressed a desire to follow in her footsteps, stating, “That’s what everybody should want to be, you know.”
The story of Claudene Wilson is a heartwarming reminder that true greatness often lies not in the spotlight, but in the daily dedication to lift others. The renaming of the school building signifies a community’s acknowledgment of quiet heroism, showing that even the most humble among us can leave a lasting legacy through their service.
As the Claudene Wilson Learning Center stands as a tribute to her dedication, it serves as an inspiration for current and future generations of students, encouraging them to appreciate the hard work and commitment of those who support them every day.
