With this win, the Longhorns improved their record to 12-1. Early offense, with seven runs in the first four innings, set the tone for the game. Strong pitching from Ruger Riojas and standout performances from players like Ethan Mendoza and Jalin Flores contributed to the victory. Excitement surrounded the game as it coincided with the first traDISCHions day honoring a former pitcher. The final game of the series is slated for Sunday.
This past Saturday afternoon, the University of Texas baseball team took the field at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin, Texas, ready to showcase their skills. Ranked 12th nationally, the Longhorns added another thrilling chapter to their season by securing an impressive 8-3 victory over Santa Clara, bringing their record to a stunning 12-1.
The game kicked off with excitement as the Longhorns’ offense came alive early. They were relentless right out of the gate, scoring in each of the first four innings—totaling an impressive seven runs during this period. All eyes were on shortstop Jalin Flores, who sparked the Longhorns with a brilliant run-scoring extra-base hit in the very first inning. This initial surge set the tone for what was to come.
Things quickly heated up when outfielder Tommy Farmer IV stepped up to the plate, driving Flores home with a solid double and extending Texas’ lead to 2-0. In what felt like the blink of an eye, the Longhorns were rolling, and it didn’t stop there. The second inning saw Flores strike again, recording his second RBI by bringing catcher Rylan Galvan home. Just like that, the score was 3-0, and excitement spread through the stadium.
Texas wasn’t done yet! In the third inning, outfielder Will Gasparino came in as a pinch hitter, hitting a dazzling double that allowed fellow sophomore Casey Borba to score. Now, the scoreboard read 4-1 in favor of the Longhorns, and the crowd could feel the momentum building.
As if that wasn’t enough, Casey Borba stepped up in the fourth inning and hit a bases-clearing double, expanding the Longhorns’ lead to an impressive 7-1. With each passing inning, Texas showcased their dominance and commitment to winning.
Santa Clara did manage to get on the scoreboard with two runs during the fifth and eighth innings, but their efforts could not put a dent into Texas’s hefty lead. The early deficit was simply too much for them to overcome, and it became clear that the Longhorns were not going to let this victory slip from their grasp.
Pitching played a crucial role in this matchup as well. Ruger Riojas, improving his record to 3-0, delivered an impressive performance on the mound, pitching an efficient 4 2/3 innings in relief while allowing just two runs on three hits. On the other hand, Santa Clara’s Victor Gomez faced challenges, earning the loss after giving up four runs in 2 1/3 innings.
On the individual front, sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza led the team with a stellar performance, securing three hits and marking his seventh multi-hit game over the past three weekends. Jalin Flores didn’t trail far behind, achieving his 11th and 12th extra-base hits in just an eight-game span since February 28.
Adding to the special atmosphere, the game coincided with the first traDISCHions day, where the Longhorns honored former pitcher Calvin Schiraldi, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
As Austin basks in the glory of the victory, the Longhorns are set to continue their series against Santa Clara. The final game is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Following this series, Texas will host UT Arlington on Tuesday, keeping the thrill of college baseball alive for fans and players alike.
The Longhorns are clearly on a roll, and it’s safe to say that Texas baseball is the place to be this week!
