The Texas Business Court opened on September 1, 2024, and has already received 50 cases within its first 90 days of operation. With 33 new filings and efforts to balance workloads among divisions, the court is becoming integral for business dispute resolutions in Texas, particularly in Houston. Additional divisions are planned by 2026 to accommodate growing case numbers, ensuring fair access to judicial resources across the state.
HOUSTON – The new Texas Business Court has officially opened its doors as of September 1, 2024, and in just 90 short days, it’s already creating quite the buzz across the Lone Star State! With a hefty total of 50 cases incoming, this court is quickly becoming the go-to venue for resolving business-related disputes that pop up throughout Texas.
Let’s really look at that 50-case tally. Out of those, 33 brand new filings came from business litigants who were eager to settle their disputes in this fresh judicial setup. Additionally, the court also welcomed 17 cases that had previously made their way through Texas district courts. It’s like a busy bee hive buzzing with activity!
The lion’s share of the action has unfolded in the Eleventh Division, catering to the thriving business community of Houston and its surrounding areas. This division has been responsible for an impressive 26 cases, making it the busiest nook of this new court. Other divisions are also pitching in to share the workload. The atmosphere in the Eleventh Division is positively electric, as judges and court staff work diligently to ensure that disputes are resolved efficiently.
Understanding the importance of a balanced court docket, Administrative Presiding Judge Dorfman has proactively taken steps toward redistributing some of the case load. Two judges from the Fourth Division, Judges Barnard and Sharp, have been tasked with overseeing four cases that were originally filed in the Eleventh Division. This initiative aims to promote a more orderly and efficient administration of justice across the board.
It’s noteworthy that these judges will handle all proceedings, including the final trials of their assigned cases, unless stated otherwise. Although these cases are still anchored in the Eleventh Division, they will have the benefit of insight from the Fourth Division to help lighten things up a bit!
As we glance toward the future, docket equalization might just become a routine practice in the Texas Business Court. It’s a savvy move, especially considering the plans to launch additional divisions set to better serve the increasing number of litigants while spreading judicial resources across Texas. This exciting expansion is set to happen in September 2026, with new divisions making their appearance in cities such as El Paso, Midland, Lubbock, Corpus Christi, Tyler, and Beaumont.
