Austin Celebrates Texas Women’s Basketball Victory Over South Dakota State
AUSTIN, Texas — The excitement resonated throughout the Moody Center as the No. 6 Texas women’s basketball team showcased their prowess in a stunning display against RV South Dakota State on Sunday. With a final score of 103-57, the Longhorns not only ended the Jackrabbits’ impressive seven-game winning streak but also demonstrated why they are considered among the top teams in the nation.
Dominance on the Court
As the game commenced, it was clear that Texas meant business. They never trailed during the match, starting strong and finishing even stronger. The Longhorns outperformed South Dakota State by a whopping 39 points compared to what the Jackrabbits typically allowed opponents to score this season. The Longhorns converted 53.9 percent of their shots from the field, hitting 41 of their 76 attempts, and showed their skill at the free throw line with an excellent 89.5 percent success rate, making 17 of 19 free throws.
Player Highlights
Freshman sensation Justice Carlton shone brightly in this match. She scored 19 points on an impressive 8-of-12 shooting performance and nabbed nine rebounds, marking the second-highest point total of her young career. Senior star Taylor Jones added to the team’s success by registering her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, bringing her career total to 22 double-doubles.
Freshman guard Jordan Lee also made a mark by netting 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting along with contributing four rebounds. Meanwhile, Rori Harmon, yet another freshman, had an impressive all-around game with 13 points, seven assists, and six steals. Not to be overlooked, Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda, who hails from South Dakota, put up 10 points in just 11 minutes on the court.
A Strong Finish to the Half
The first quarter saw the Longhorns grabbing an early lead at 24-11, courtesy of a layup by freshman Bryanna Preston. Texas ramped up the pressure in the second quarter, initiating a stunning 10-0 run midway through and closing the half with a dominant 53-26 lead. Carlton was particularly sensational, scoring 17 out of the 29 points that Texas posted in that quarter.

As the teams headed into the second half, harmony resonated for Texas, who continued their commanding lead with a quick 6-0 run. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, the Longhorns were feeling the rhythm, making their last four shots of the game and securing a well-deserved victory.
