Immersive Art in Austin
Here in the heart of Texas, a new artistic phenomenon has taken centre stage – and it’s quite the squiggly spectacle. The city’s vibrant arts scene recently welcomed a distinctive addition to its flair that you’ll find adorning the 515 Congress Parking structure in downtown Austin. The extensive mural, a buzz-worthy feast for the eyes, is the work of the celebrated British artist, Mr Doodle.
Artist Profile: Mr Doodle, A celebration of shapes
Mr Doodle, or Samuel Cox as he’s known in non-artistic circles, is a British artist revered for his hyper-detailed doodles. He dedicates himself to filling spaces with his trademark cartoonish designs that intertwine characters, objects, and abstract shapes. His freestyle piece in Austin is his first foray into the Texas art scene.
When the Doodle Met the Congress Parking Structure
The creation of the mural was an all-day event. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Mr Doodle worked tirelessly to transform the monotonous parking structure into a vibrant canvas. This marathon painting session coincided with the SXSW festival’s premiere of Mr Doodle’s film, “The Trouble with Mr Doodle“, the title of which features in the top right corner of the mural.
Local Support for Global Art
The ambitious project was made possible by the sponsorship from KBS and the Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation, with further support from Art + Artisans. Speaking on the Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation’s website, Mr Doodle said, “I’m so excited to bring the Doodles to Texas for the very first time. This wall is an amazing canvas, and I really hope the people of Austin will like the finished mural.”
The Finished Mural: A New Landmark
Located at the busy intersection of Congress Avenue and East 6th Street, the parking structure is now a visual feast and an urban landmark. The once grey and inconspicuous parking garage has been reborn as a radiant canvas adorned with the charming and intricate doodles.
