Kathie Tovo Officially Launches Mayoral Campaign, Criticizes Incumbent Mayor Kirk Watson

June 7, 2024, Austin, TX –

Last night, Kathie Tovo, a former Austin City Council member who served between 2012 to 2023, announced her bid for the city’s mayor. Sparing no words, she immediately lodged criticisms towards the current Mayor, Kirk Watson.

The Campaign Launch

Tovo’s campaign took off at a bustling affair held at the El Mercado Restaurant located in South Austin. Here, she unabashedly conveyed her position, stating, “I believe we need new leadership. We need a mayor at City Hall who is focused on working with the community, a mayor who is committed to open and transparent government, who will be a fighter for working families.” Tovo, notably, was insinuating that within these descriptions, Mayor Watson was starkly absent.

Tovo went on to critique Watson’s handling of the HOME initiative as well as HOME 2. She argued that the decrees failed to safeguard vulnerable east side neighborhoods from the threat of short-term rentals.

Tovo’s Disapproval of Watson’s Deal

In addition, Tovo expressed her strong disapproval of the short-lived agreement Watson made with the Department of Public Safety to supervise Austin streets. The contract ended abruptly due to mounting criticisms that Black and brown citizens were unjustifiably being singled out and targeted in vast numbers. An arrangement that lasted less than 60 days, it continues to ignite resentment within certain sections of the community – a point Tovo was keen to exploit during her campaign launch.

Noteworthy Supporters

Among the attendees at the campaign kickoff event was Nelson Linder, President of the NAACP. Linder was seen urging attendees to support Tovo in the upcoming election. Furthermore, former Council Member, Ora Houston, was present at the event and spoke in favor of Tovo’s candidacy as well.

Bobby Levinski, a former aide to Tovo, expressed his support for her, reminiscing fondly about her resolute and consistent stance during her tenure in Council.

On the other hand, Council Member Alison Alter, notable for her disagreement with Mayor Watson’s methods, attended the event privately, refraining from making any public statements.

In Summation

With the Mayoral election heating up, former Austin City Council member Kathie Tovo has begun her campaign in earnest. She aims to take on incumbent Mayor Kirk Watson, criticizing his tenure and calling for new and more community-focused leadership.
