Spring is officially in the air, and that can only mean one thing for sports fans in Austin: it’s time for some thrilling college softball! The University of Texas at Austin softball team is kicking off the Bevo Classic this weekend, and there’s buzz in the air as the Longhorns are riding high as the nation’s No. 1 ranked team. With a perfect record of 6-0 to start the season, they’ve got the momentum and confidence heading into this much-anticipated event.
In just three days, the Longhorns showcased their grit by winning six back-to-back games across three different cities. It was a whirlwind of strength and skill that any fan would be proud of! Now, they’re back on home turf at McCombs Field, ready to host the Bevo Classic, which features a total of four teams and 10 games. This tournament is not just a chance for Texas, but also for other competitive teams to show off their talents.
This year, the Bevo Classic will include teams like Maryland, Massachusetts (UMass), and Texas Tech – all of whom will be gearing up to take on the Longhorns. The excitement kicks off Friday morning at 11 a.m. when Maryland takes on UMass. Then, Texas will step up to the plate against Maryland at 4 p.m. The stakes are high, as every team aims for a stronger position heading into the NCAA Tournament.
Speaking of competition, everyone has been eyeing Texas Tech, currently ranked No. 11 with a 5-1 record. They’re not to be underestimated, especially with their star pitcher, who was last year’s USA Softball Player of the Year. Notably, Stanley had an impressive season with 337 strikeouts and an incredibly low ERA of 0.73. It’s a relief to note that Texas has previously taken down this formidable pitcher twice during last year’s Women’s College World Series (WCWS). Let’s see if history repeats itself!
While Texas has their eyes set on the prize, Maryland and UMass are also eyeing an NCAA Tournament spot. UMass, though they haven’t had a winning record since 2019, was once a significant player in the Atlantic 10. Meanwhile, Maryland is fresh off a solid 6-3 victory against California last weekend, showing they can be tough opponents. With such fierce competition, every game is bound to be thrilling!
For Texas, keep an eye on catcher Reese Atwood, who has been hitting a solid .350 this season with 10 runs batted in (RBIs). Not far behind are offensive dynamo Kayden Henry and standout player Leighann Goode, both boasting impressive .500 batting averages. On the pitching side, Teagan Kavan and newcomer Cambria Salmon have been effective, keeping Texas’s defense strong as they approach the tournament.
If you can’t make it to McCombs Field, don’t worry! You can tune in to the Bevo Classic games live through SEC Network+. With games scheduled to wrap up with Texas and Texas Tech facing off on Sunday at 12:30 p.m., there’s plenty of excitement in store.
Texas softball is fully embracing social media to keep fans engaged and up-to-date with live stats during the tournament. So whether you’re cheering from the stands or watching from home, make sure to support the Longhorns as they battle it out this weekend in what promises to be thrilling weekend of college softball!
