Austin, Texas – The University of Texas at Austin community is coming together to honor and remember the extraordinary life of Professor _Ekwere J. Peters_, who passed away on March 17, 2025, at the age of 77. Hailing from Ikot Eyo in Nigeria, Peters left a remarkable legacy in the fields of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering, mentoring countless students during his illustrious career.
Throughout his impressive 30-year tenure at the University of Texas, Peters was not just an educator; he wore many hats, serving as an inspirational mentor and academic advisor. His courses on _Drilling and Well Completions_, _Production Technology_, and _Pressure Transient Analysis_ gained widespread recognition and proved to be invaluable to students and professionals alike. Beyond the classroom, Peters maintained an active role in several community organizations, including the _Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria, USA, Inc. (AKISAN)_ and the _Ikot Eyo Association in Diaspora (IEAD)_.
Peters, who retired from his teaching role in 2011, held prestigious academic titles such as the _Frank W. Jessen Endowed Professorship_ and the _George H. Fancher, Jr. Endowed Professorship_ in Petroleum Engineering. His expertise extended to researching advanced petrophysics, where he published over _70 research papers_ and authored significant textbooks that remain go-to references in the industry. His pioneering work in _CT and NMR imaging technologies_ has greatly contributed to the field, specifically focusing on enhanced oil recovery and environmental remediation efforts.

Outside of his academic pursuits, Peters was known for his engaging personality and love for soccer. He was not just a fan but had a stint playing for Austin FC, sharing a passion for the sport with his family—his son now plays junior football in Houston. Moreover, Peters was a talented amateur photographer and enjoyed creating educational-themed computer games.
Those who knew Peters often spoke of his culinary talents, especially in Nigerian cuisine, where he even crafted his own _habanero hot sauce_. Family was at the heart of his life—he cherished moments with his wife Unwa, two children, and grandson, alongside his beloved pets. His integrity, wisdom, and kindness resonated with students and colleagues alike, making him a cherished figure within the community.
The University of Texas System Board of Regents has established the _Ekwere J. Peters Endowed Scholarship_ in Petroleum & Geosystems Engineering, ensuring that his legacy of education continues to support future scholars. A visitation service for Dr. Peters will be held on March 27, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Austin, and his funeral service is scheduled for March 28, 2025, at the same venue.
