The University of Texas at Austin welcomes Rachel Davis Mersey as its new provost and executive vice president. Mersey, previously interim provost, brings extensive academic and industry experience. Her role will be crucial in overseeing multiple portfolios, including UT’s billion-dollar research enterprise, while aiming to elevate the university’s standing in higher education. Under her leadership, the university is expected to thrive and further enhance its academic vision.
In the vibrant city of Austin, big exciting changes are happening at the University of Texas! As of Monday, Rachel Davis Mersey has officially been named the provost and executive vice president of the university, a role that places her at the heart of the academic workings of one of the largest public universities in the nation.
This new chapter comes after Mersey stepped into the role of interim provost on August 27, following the resignation of Sharon Wood, who has decided to return to her roots as a faculty member in the Cockrell School of Engineering. The provost at UT is essentially the top academic officer and is pivotal in supporting the university president in shaping the institution’s academic vision and strategy.
Mersey is no stranger to leadership and excellence; she has a proven record in academia as well as experience in the tech industry. Her prior tenure as the dean of the Moody College of Communication and her role at Meta, where she directed Global Research Partnerships, shows a dynamic range of expertise that she brings to her new role.
As provost, Mersey will oversee a staggering seven portfolios, one of which includes managing UT’s billion-dollar research enterprise. With her at the helm, the university is riding a wave of momentum, experiencing a surge in both national rankings and academic applications this year, further solidifying its reputation as a top-tier institution.
Under her guidance during her interim period, Mersey actively represented the university by testifying before the Texas Senate Higher Education Subcommittee and participating in widely attended events like the Texas Tribune Festival. This engagement showcases her commitment to fostering academic dialogue and collaboration.
Her academic credentials are impressive as well. Mersey earned her doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a master’s degree from Northwestern’s Medill School. Before joining UT in 2020, she had already made a name for herself as an associate dean for research at the Medill School, proving her depth of knowledge and experience in the field.
Working alongside President Jay Hartzell, Mersey aims to elevate UT to become the highest-impact public research university in the world. Their collaborative vision and shared commitment to academic excellence are bound to inspire both faculty and students as they embark on this exciting journey together.
Meanwhile, the university bids farewell to Sharon Wood, who has made significant strides during her three years as vice president and provost. Her impactful initiatives such as the “Take the World by the Horns” program and the AI Cluster Hire initiative have left lasting impressions and will form the foundation of future programs.
As the university transitions into this new leadership era, Dr. Anita Vangelisti, currently the senior associate dean for faculty affairs and graduate education at Moody, will step in as interim dean of the college during Mersey’s absence. The leadership changes at UT signify growth, opportunity, and a thrilling new chapter for academics in Austin.
The excitement brewing within the university community is palpable as students, faculty, and staff look forward to what Mersey will bring to the table. With her strategic mindset and dedication, it’s clear that the University of Texas at Austin is in great hands as it continues to strive for excellence in higher education.
As we travel this academic journey together, it is an exhilarating time to be part of the UT community. Welcome, Rachel Davis Mersey! The future looks bright!
