New Data Shows Dramatic Increase in Austin Vehicle Thefts

In an alarming reveal, new data from the Council on Criminal Justice indicates that 500 to 600 vehicles were stolen in Austin virtually every month this year. According to the council’s recently released Crime Trends in U.S. Cities: Mid-year 2024 Update, vehicle thefts have seen a steep increase since the year 2019.

Spike in Vehicle Thefts Following “Kia Challenge” Video

Many blame escalating motor vehicle thefts on a social media phenomenon known as the “Kia Challenge” popularized through a viral video. The video, showcased how to steal Hyundai and Kia cars using just a USB cable—a fact that has resulted in a surge of thefts of these particular vehicle brands.

Ernesto Lopez, a senior researcher with the Council on Criminal Justice, expressed concern over this trend. “Since the video went viral, we saw a significant spike in motor vehicle theft,” Lopez stated. “From the first half of 2019 to the first half of 2024, the City of Austin witnessed a whopping 145% increase in vehicle theft.”

Hyundai and Kia Thefts Account for Nearly Half of the Total

According to the Austin Police Department, approximately 800 Hyundai and Kia vehicles have been stolen so far this year, accounting for a staggering 42% of all vehicle thefts in the city. In response to this, Hyundai has conducted two pop-up clinics this year which offered owners of the most frequently stolen models free anti-theft software installation.

Other Possible Factors: Inflation, Police Shortage, and the Black Market

In addition to the fallout from the “Kia Challenge” video, Lopez suggested other potential factors contributing to the rise in car thefts. High inflation rates may play a role, as stolen vehicles and automobile parts could fetch a good price on the black market. Staffing shortages in the police force, with more than 300 vacant positions in the Austin Police Department, may have also indirectly contributed to this worrying trend. Lopez added that “clearance rates for motor vehicle thefts are extremely low, about 15% on average.”

To combat the growing menace of vehicle theft, car owners are being urged to take precautionary measures, including parking in well-lit areas, locking their doors, not leaving valuables in the vehicle, and installing vehicle immobilizer and tracking systems.
