Violent Weekend in Austin: Two Homicides and a Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting

A fatal series of events unfolded in Austin, Texas over the weekend as the city was rattled by two homicides and a deadly officer-involved shooting within less than 48 hours. Despite the swift police action, no arrests have been made till now.

Midnight Mayhem Unleashed

The officer-involved shooting took place in Northwest Austin following an array of 911 calls on Friday, late at night. Reports of loud music and eventual gunfire from the Summer Grove Apartments on San Felipe Blvd surfaced. Eyewitnesses reported a white male, dressed in black, holding a black AR with four to five Hispanic males captive. “Austin police, show me your hands,” was the command by the police which the suspect rebuffed, pointing his gun at the officers. Realizing the severity of the threat, the officers shot the suspect, who later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital. Securing the apartment further, a SWAT team was called to ensure no other suspects were present.

Early Morning Attack

At 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, police officers rushed to a deadly shooting at Quincy Apartments on Red River Street. Multiple gunshots were heard before a victim was located. Identified as 24-year-old Alan Picazzo, the man was pronounced dead in the hospital. Police remain tight-lipped about the exact location where the body was found, in the interest of maintaining the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Sunday Night’s Dread

Another deadly shooting in North Austin claimed the life of a man in his 30s on Sunday night. Policemen rushed to Rutland Drive near Metric Blvd and Rundberg Lane around 8:30 p.m. and found the man had been shot. Declared dead at the scene, the victim was later identified as 39-year-old Lowen Alberto Ordonez Lobo. Authorities have termed this incident as isolated and clarified that there’s no known threat to the public owing to this specific case.

Statistical Shift in Crime Rate

Despite the violent weekend, the homicide count in Austin for 2024 stands at 18, marking a 31% decrease compared to this time last year, when 26 homicides had been reported. While the drop in crime rate offers a silver lining, the violent occurrences over the weekend have unnerved the city’s residents and put law enforcement on stringent vigil.
