Today, we eagerly anticipate the celebration of the 87th birthday of one of Austin’s favorite sons, Willie Nelson. Rather than a one-sided exchange of gifts, we’ve decided to lend you a piece of history neatly packed in a YouTube video. Tune in to Nelson’s iconic 1974 appearance on the Austin-based PBS show, Austin City Limits.
The series had its pilot episode back on October 17, 1974, featuring the legendary Nelson and his family. The series was taped at Studio 6A in the University of Texas at Austin’s Communications Building B for its first 36 seasons. Later, its operation base shifted to Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater after the show held its first taping at that studio on February 26, 2011.
To ensure no one forgets the tribute to Nelson, the street where the Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater stands has proudly been named Willie Nelson Boulevard. Further, a gargantuan statue of Nelson graces the street as an imposing reminder of the country music legend.
Also, in honor of Nelson’s birthday, ACL Live generously shared the recipe for their signature drink, the Red Headed Stranger. Now, you can relish it in the comfort of your living room as you watch the historical taping. It’s worth noting that the show bearing the same moniker was shot right in Central Texas on Nelson’s Luck Ranch. The same venue also hosts the annual Luck Reunion, an event no self-proclaimed Nelson fan should miss!
Willie Nelson, the Red Headed Stranger, holds a storied legacy in Austin, and his birthday is the perfect occasion to revisit the early days of his career. Nelson’s iconic 1974 appearance on Austin City Limits is a defining moment of his career and a cherished piece of Austin’s musical history.
So, Austin, gear up to greet Willie Nelson on his birthday and stay tuned to various platforms for other wonderful ways to explore our city, such as our guide to enjoying Austin’s beautiful outdoors, and several local events marking Star Wars Day.

In conclusion, join us in celebrating Willie Nelson and everything he’s given to Austin and the world. Here’s to many more years of music and unforgettable times on the boulevard named in his honor!
